Hey guys I've been shooting music videos with a 5d Mark 3 for 3 years and eventually plan to start working with 4k footage soon. (for instance RED or one of these 4k DSLRs like the GH4) I'm researching upgrading my computer to prepare for the transition. I was thinking originally 1 hexa core CPU, but from doing research for 4K, I'm reading these extreme requirements like needing Dual Xeon processors etc. Maybe that is needed for RED footage, but is all of that really necessary for something like GH4 footage? Regardless, I want to build a new system that is "somewhat" future proof. And will be able to edit 4k footage smoothly in Sony Vegas Pro 12.

My current specs are:
i7 quad core 2600k
24 gigs ram
gigabyte mobo GA-z68x-ud3h-b3 LGA 1155
Windows 7 ultimate
startup disk 250gb SSD
project and media disk (separate) 250gb SSD
and an Nvidia GTX 550 ti graphics card

Approximate Purchase Date: The earliest I would buy this is Cyber Monday Dec 1st, 2014.

Budget Range: $1,000-4,000 Now of course, I would prefer to stay on the lower end, but I also understand a 4k system is not cheap. My goal is to have a "reasonably" future proof system that I won't have to upgrade in the next 5 years. At the same time, I also don't want to do overkill if something like 2 Dual Xeons isn't really necessary right now.

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Editing 4K video footage in Sony Vegas Pro 12

Are you buying a monitor: No

Parts to Upgrade:
-CPU
-Add More RAM to current
-MOBO, if Dual CPU is necessary for 4K, lets find a board to accommodate that and also has Thunderbolt
-Case (I want to upgrade form mid tower to full tower)
-Power Supply,
-GPU
-Project/Media Disk

Do you need to buy OS: No

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: N/A

Location: City, State/Region, Country - Kansas City, KS

Parts Preferences: Intel

Overclocking: No

SLI or Crossfire: I don't know

Additional Comments: Needs to be able to edit 4k footage smoothly in Sony Vegas Pro 12. Don't want to upgrade for about 5 years if possible.

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: Preparing to work with 4K footage after shooting HD on a 5d mark 3 for 3 years.

Thanks

Roger

The current gen components are the ones that are currently selling. Intel is releasing their new "Haswell-E" SKUs in Q3 around September and NVidia and AMD around Q4. The new X99 MBs will have DDR4 support (faster memory that consume less power). The case is the only thing you could (not should) get now.

The example is what that build would look like today and is supposed to give you some idea of the price. I do not (and can not) guarantee that the new releases will be the same price, though it is likely it will be similar.
I do not actually recommend current gen

Get 5930K ~500
X99 MB ~400
Crossfire/SLI 2 or 3 cards Maxwell or (what ever AMD new architecture is called) ~ 900
32 GB DDR4 ~400
Cooler ~100
Case ~200
PSU 1300 W ~200

Today's Example (replace with parts mentioned above)
