I'm starting to wonder if I should start upgrading my cpu at this point as its starting to get pretty old in comparison, heck it came out in 2008...

Its running at around 50-70% cpu usage when I run a modern game- like Assassins Creed unity. Im starting to wonder if the cpu is limiting my fps a bit, and if it will become a notable problem in the future. I mainly use my computer for gaming and art in photoshop.

My original plan was to wait for Skylake, but I'm not sure if that will actually be worth the wait or not.

To upgrade my cpu I will need a new Mobo and possibly a new case, so If I do go for an upgrade It will likely have to be another long lasting upgrade.(the current cpu is on its 6th year)

I know Skylake isnt out yet and little info is out about it, but would grabbing a higher end cpu of the current generation likely be my best bet for longevity? Also what would be the best combination of mobo/cpu if that is the case. I'm mostly okay with mild overclocking as well.

I'd ideally like to spend under 500$ for the upgrade, but the best bang for my buck is a higher priority then cost.

Also I'm Canadian, so my prices are all inflated >.>

I'm currently looking at the i7 4790k, but I'm wondering if the added price is worth it over the i5 4690k, I have no clue what mobo or why 1 mobo is really better then another...

Thanks!

Broadwell is next in line after Haswell then Skylake. I think your CPU is fine with your 970, perhaps wait for Broadwell early next year to upgrade when it comes out, they sound like a core shrink, not much performance gain, but it will effect pricing a bit.

Since your CPU is fine why thinking of upgrade?? Even if you upgrade the CPU, gaming experience would exactly be the same as with Core i7 920 @ 4.0Ghz. I say you should wait till 2016 for much newer generation CPU's like the AMD's Zen architecture based CPU. Intel too have great CPUs at 2016. You would probably gain a lot in upgrading @ 2016 than now.

AC: unity isn't the best game to base a purchase on, it's quite horribly optimized, so yeah, The 920 still gives more or less identical fps compared haswell.
I see no reason to update at this point.
