Upgrade cpu/motherboard on old computer vs upgrade GPU on slightly newer one

I have two computers:

One OLD AMD fx-6100 build with 16gb DDR3 ram and a rattling GTX 560, serving as my old HTTP computer

One newer i7 4770k build with 16gb DDR3 ram, a slightly better GTX 770 2GB, in a tower case for another room.

I have some money to spend now, but don't know what to do with it.

Knowing that my HTTP is so old, I am tempted to upgrade it to an i7 7700k (I already have 8gb spare DDR4), new motherboard. Then leave upgrading the GPU to later. This would sort this machine out for several years, although I don't game on it much so don't use need its power too often.

OR for similar money I could buy a new GPU like a GTX 1070 and upgrade my already better machine, to ensure my 1080p gaming is good to go for the next couple of years.

What would you do? I game every now and then but don't get loads of time for it, but on the other hand, I rarely need the living room PC to be a powerhouse. Ideas?

Well, if you are not a really strong gamer, why spend $400 on a GPU just for 1080p? I would go with a RX 560 or 570, as you do light gaming. As far as upgrading to the 7700K, i don't see it as something necessary if you are not using it as much. Hell, the GTX 770 can still be used for gaming (depending on what you wanna do). So honestly, if you are not that much into gaming, and don't need it to a be powerhouse, there is no need to upgrade much.

That's just my three cents.

Thanks Herc08, the reason was that I have got rid of loads of old stuff recently and sold to a store that gave me in store credit, which is now burning a hole in my pocket 😉

I was playing Deus Ex Mankind Divided recently and noticed that even on my GTX770 there was some stuttering, so assumed that it is getting a little bit weaker than it used to be. So I was thinking that something like a GTX 1070 should be able to see me through my 1080p days, until a few years when I probably start looking at a 4k setup.

Well the 1070 would definitely help, but if you are unsure about 4K, then go witht he RX 580 and save a few bucks.

Thanks very much for your answer Herc08. That's helped me. I will get a better GPU for now, and leave the CPU/mobo upgrade till later.
