Upgrade CPU on Dell T7810?

Hi,

I have recently purchased a used Dell T7810, which has a single Xeon E5-2630 v3 in it. Ideally I would like something with a better single core performance and so I was thinking about my options. I contacted Dell to see if the E5-1600 v3s would work (although not officially supported) and the guy I spoke to (which wasn't tech support as I have no support code until I get the PC) said that once the PC had been configured with a particular CPU it could not be changed without changing the chipset, which I thought was a bit odd unless they have deliberately crippled the possibility of upgrading CPUs. The only way I could 'upgrade' was by adding a second CPU which of course is no use to what I am trying to achieve. So, the questions are:

1) Is it true that these CPUs cannot be upgraded at all? I have never heard of a CPU upgrade not being possible between CPUs of the same family with a compatible chipset (Intel C612).

2) Is anyone aware of whether a single E5-1600 would work (I know two wouldn't)?

This thread tells me what I want to know as far as the T7910 is concerned but I do not know of the differences between the motherboards on these PCs.

My upgrade thoughts were towards the E5-1650 v3 (or v4 as its due soon) depending what I can find cheap ish on eBay.

Anyway if anyone has any ideas and is willing to assist it would be appreciated! I felt this was more suited to the motherboard section given that the motherboard is the key component in this question, if it should be in the CPU section, apologies.

You would only need to change the chipset to move to a different generation of chip. If it's running an E5 v3, then it can support any of the E5 v3 chips. A single 16xx chip should work fine. If you are buying used, the 16xx chips are not always cheaper than the 26xx chips.
You will probably need a bios update to run any of the v4 chips. From what little I've read, they really aren't any faster.

That's what I thought. I saw on the Dell support site last night the latest BIOS specifically states it supports Broadwell 1600 v4 and 2600 v4 so that looks like it should work too. The issue with the used ones on eBay is that most of the 2600s are either the really slow ones that are worse than the 2630 or are engineering samples which don't always have turbo at all IIRC. The price the 1600s are new I would consider a new one to be honest. The 1620 for example should be better than the 2630 yet they are only about £230 new. Would rather have a 1630 or 1650 but if needs be a 1620 goes to 3.6 and runs 3.5 on all four cores.
