Upgrade CPU or GPU to increase FPS for CSGO

At the moment I am running CSGO on high settings at 1080p at roughly 90-200fps (CPU usage is around 50-70%)
As a CSGO semi-professional, anything under 144fps is a disadvantage for me, so I was curious which I should upgrade to boost my FPS.

I can easily afford a GTX 1060/1070 though? Not too good on GPU's but from my knowledge they are better.

My guess is that cpu core speed is holding you back.
FX chips are notoriously slow.

Some games are graphics limited like fast action shooters.
Others are cpu core speed limited like strategy, sims, and mmo.
Multiplayer with many participants tend to like many threads.

You need to find out which.
------------------------------------------------------------
To help clarify your CPU/GPU options, run these two tests:

a) Run YOUR games, but lower your resolution and eye candy.
If your FPS increases, it indicates that your cpu is strong enough to drive a better graphics configuration.
If your FPS stays the same, you are likely more cpu limited.

b) Limit your cpu, either by reducing the OC, or, in windows power management, limit the maximum cpu% to something like 70%.
Go to control panel/power options/change plan settings/change advanced power settings/processor power management/maximum processor state/
This will simulate what a lack of cpu power will do.
Conversely what a 30% improvement in core speed might do.

You should also experiment with removing one core. You can do this in the windows msconfig boot advanced options option.
You will need to reboot for the change to take effect. Set the number of processors to less than you have.
This will tell you how sensitive your games are to the benefits of many threads.

If your FPS drops significantly, it is an indicator that your cpu is the limiting factor, and a cpu upgrade is in order.

It is possible that both tests are positive, indicating that you have a well balanced system,
and both cpu and gpu need to be upgraded to get better gaming FPS.
-------------------------------------------------------------

Do not be misled by less than 100% cpu utilization.
It may just be Windows spreading out the activity of a few threads over all available threads.

I was just thinking about how in 2 weeks Ryzen will be launching but for that upgrade you need the cpu and a new AM4 motherboard and DDR4 ram. That's easily over $500 and you can't do it until early March. The 1070 is $390 and you can get it tomorrow with rush shipping.

You think 90fps is a disadvantage? Wow...who told you that crap?

I don't think you realise how much FPS means in CSGO when you're a semi-professional. I have a 144hz monitor meaning anything under 144hz is a disadvantage to me. Please research before you get butt-hurt.

Thanks for the detailed answer I appreciate it alot! I will do the tests tomorrow :)

I don't think you know what "butt-hurt" means. I used to play shooters semi-pro as well. Your obsession with having super high FPS is really misplaced.
