when i try to upgrade am told cpu not compatable. is there anything i can do besides replacing cpu?

Ugrade your overall rig, your rig is not compatible even for the most application nowadays.
If your current specification is Pentium 4 (According to Dell Sites) It's time for PC upgrades.

Maybe upgrade the video card, but it probably would still prevent you to upgrade since the cpu is what is not compatible and is too outdated for the operating system, just upgrade the whole system, or just get a lower operating system like windows 7 or 8
