I have a freind who was bent on still having XP sh she just went out and purchased a retail copy of XP Pro. She has finally figured out that she really does need to move to Win 7. She purchased the XP in the past month. Is there some sort of break she can get from MS?

No. There were pre-order discounts before Windows 7 was released and OEM copies of XP were coming with coupons to upgrade to Windows 7 for free. If there was no coupon, there really isn't any way of getting any sort of discount. If the copy of XP were unopened, then she could return it to where she bought it and then buy Windows 7... but that would be the only option.

Yes, the upgrade version will save her a little money. Compare the upgrade version and full retail version here, http://bit.ly/comparewindows.

Windows 7 will be about the same price wherever she decides to purchase it. If she sees a prices that is too good to be true, it probably is! Make sure she purchases for a reputable retailer or Microsoft Partner to ensure that she gets a genuine copy of Windows - http://bit.ly/genuinewindows.
