Upgrade entire system or just GPU?

I'm currently running a 3 year old set up and looking to upgrade for gaming purposes, running 1920x1080 dual monitors.

Current:
i7-4790 3.60 GHz
16GB DDR3 1600 RAM
GTX 760 3 GB
Crucial MX300 525GB SATA SSD

I'm not on a strict budget, but am trying to decide between upgrading everything with a new rig in the $1,000-1,500 range, or just trying to replace one or two parts for a significant but cheaper upgrade. Recommendations?

If it were me, I'd drop a new GPU in there and call it a day. Your i7 is really quite powerful still, healthy amount of RAM, SSD, all looks good. Weak spot appears to be GPU.

If you're looking at staying at 1080 resolution monitors, a 6GB 1060 or 1070 ought to give your gaming experience a shot in the arm.

Thanks for the response! I mostly play Fortnite and League of Legends, so I get a totally serviceable fps on those but can't extend my draw distance and get super smooth fps. I'm not looking to get amazing graphics on bleeding edge games, but I do want to be able to get the most out of the less demanding games I spend the most time with.

Thanks Yeti! I'd been looking at that 6gb 1060, so I'm glad to hear you say that. How do I know which model of it to grab? Amazon has a ton of different configurations and some abbreviations I frankly don't understand ;-)

^^^This, your system is more then enough for today's games/ VR (if interested) and easily 4K with a GPU upgrade. I'm running a stock 4770K/16gb RAM & a GTX 1080 ti on 4K and it runs games beautifully. For within your budget you can get a 1080 ti and a 27" 4K/Gsync monitor.
