I'd like to play Diablo 4 at "high" (not the Ultra 4K settings) settings and based upon Blizzard 's info my existing system won't cut it, but I think I could upgrade some core components and be OK, but then again do I want to spend money on a "dead" platform? (AM4).

Approximate Purchase Date: within 1-2 weeks

Budget Range: Up to $1,100

System Usage from Most to Least Important: RPG/MMORPG as well as regular desktop use (Office, Quicken, etc.)

Are you buying a monitor: No, will keep existing monitors

Do you need to buy OS: No

The current system:
PSU -EVGA 100-BR-0450-K1 450 BR
Mid ATX Tower-Thermaltake Versa H21
Motherboard: ASUS Prime x370-A
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600
16 GB RAM
Samsung SSD 840 EVO 1 TB
ASUS GeForce GTX 1050-Ti
Creative Labs SoundBlaster Audigy 5/RX

IF I upgrade I'd get a new PS, CPU, more RAM, and Video card.
However, I'll be limited by the Prime's PCI 3.0 bus for the video which may basically mean I'm going to have to basically get a new system (more or less). At least, if I take the recs from Blizzard that I need a GeForce RTX 2060 or Radeon RX5700XT, those don't even get close to a PCI 3.0 video card and, IMO, if I'm taking a 40% hit due to the bus, it's not worth spending $250-300 on a video card, right?

So specc'd out the following (I could probably keep the existing case). Constructive feedback is appreciated. I didn't go with the gigabyte motherboard due to coil whine issues I see all over the place. While I prefer ASUS, that's not going to happen and I like Nvidia as well, but the $100 or so price difference doesn't seem worth it, IMO for the RTX-3060.

The Ryzen 7600X is cheaper than the non-x right now.
2TB SSD
Better GPU
Non-plastic windowed case
Don't need a 1000W PSU for this/most builds.

Wow, thanks! Will look over the various builds. Especially appreciate the WD 2 TB find. BTW, currently only have 450 GB of the 1 TB used now.

Only problem with the gigabyte boards is the coil whine. Otherwise I'd go with them, but I think NewEgg has an OpenBox for the MSI Tomahawk for close to that.

Coil whine is not specific to any brand or model number. Coil whine can be on any product with coils.

As for my suggestion, personally I would upgrade your existing platform for significantly less like so. Feel free to swap to a cheaper GPU or up to a 5800X3D to keep it within budget. Also if you wanted a new case you can certainly get a cheaper graphics card and fit that in. Upgrading your system now, imo, is a much better value. All you would be investing into the AM4 platform would be a new CPU, every other part that you are purchasing can be carried over to the next build.

I agree with just the upgrade, but I would probably go ahead and get a Ryzen 5700X or go for the 5800X3D.

7900XT is cool, but that seems overkill. 6800XT will get the job done for a lot less.

You don't have to spend the whole budget:

This thread is reminding me of the good ole days of the original Diablo in 1997 on my Pentium 75... tons of hacked items being traded... oh yeah.

Never played D2 or D3... but my next purchase will be D4. Tried it during the free weekend and was impressed.

Personally D4 was a flop for me in the gameplay department. D2 and D2R will remain the best of the Diablo games for the foreseeable future. Path of Exile requires either a Ph D. in Statistical & Data Analysis, and 3000+ hours of experience with all the mechanics to enjoy past their campaign or you follow a guide made by other people so you don't have to use your brain for anything.

Never even heard of Path of Exile... LOL... and I've forgotten what Diablo gameplay was like... 26 years is a long gap. Will definitely considering looking into D2 in the future though.

OP... not sure if it's helpful but just got an email from NewEgg about the 5800x3D going on sale.

5800X3D $310 after $15 off

Wow, lots to think about. So from what I've gathered, I don't even need the M.2 SSD. My current SATA3 SSD will suffice (from what I've read, yeah the benchmarks will show a difference, but I probably won't be able to tell the difference). So that'll save $100 or so.

Also I double-checked. I have a PC Power & Cooling Silencer 600 Watt PS. Case is an old Cooler Master something or other, but I have no problems getting a newer case w/fans (I left out fans, but I have them in the existing system as well).

I can see about upgrading, but I'm not finding anything good about upgrading the GPU given the PCI 3.0 bus in the PRime x370-A motherboard. Spending $250-$300 on a new video card that's going to suffer 30-50% performance hit because of the PCI bus (without motherboard upgrade) isn't appealing, IMO.

But I'll have to research a bit more (quick search seemed to indicate that it won't matter in that regard whether it's Nvidia or AMD, it's just the fact that the system reqs for "high" for D4 seem to require at least a "last gen" video card, and I've got a 4th/5th gen motherboard (ha)

Where'd you get that number from? 30-50%??

that 4GB ram GPU and on x8 pcie lanes...once you fill up vram, youll get hard bottleneck due to slow pcie lanes....but OP wants better GPU than 4GB VRAM card lol

Ok.... I guess I'm just confusing myself for no reason. 🤣

Just want to reiterate that Thermalright is pretty much king of budget air cooling right now. The Peerless Assassin is also a good choice for dual tower air cooler (basically pick whichever is cheapest from them and you have a winner). PCIe 3.0 vs 4.0 only matters for cards that don't have enough lanes to deal with the lower bandwidth. I believe with the 6600 series + you're going to see negligible performance differences, and anything with x16 lanes on PCIe 3.0 is likely to be fine.

ye, but if you plan to use gen4/gen5 nvme with upcoming games and directstorage, that might be different story as games keeps gettin bigger

I would consider a Intel processor just a bit better performance, double the SSD space, better video card with the 6700XT, better case great cooler, sorry changed the build to white.

Replaced everything so you could sell your PC and get a few hundred bucks.

Thanks again for updates. Upon further reading/reflection it seems that the GPU PCIe 4.x card in a PCIe 3.0 slot won't be a major issue IF you get a card with more RAM. At least my reading is that the more ram in the video card, the less it has to go through the limited PCI 3.0 bus for stuff, which apparently is why the 4GB video card reviewed/tested by Tomshardware had such a hit (IMO) at higher resolutions.
