Advice please, upgrading my computer and would like input on what would be compatible, yet not obscenely expense. My ex built several years ago, and still works well but I'd like to upgrade since my focus and usage has changed a bit...not to mention, it's time. Since I game very little these days and my main use is Adobe Illustrator as well as other graphic and plotter software. I'd like to upgrade (if necessary) with more memory, CPU as well as another graphics card. It's my understanding that this board will support multiple devices. Basically I'd like to get the most bang for my buck, and the bucks are limited. :)

Specs:
CPU i7 920
6 GB Triple-Channel DDR3 (7-7-7-19)
MSI X58 Platinum (MS-7422)
SyncMaster 1023 MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460
913 GB WDC WD 10EALS
APEVIA case (sorry don't know the model type, but should be sufficient space)
Power Supply Corsair GS800

Budget is around $600.00 lower if possible since I still have to pay for install etc. I know it's not tons, but having to start looking into replacing the laptop as well.

The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite C655-S5118. I originally purchased it to run cake software, so didn't need or expect much. Really never expected to use if for day to day, and since I was gaming a bit more at the time I was always at the desktop. I quickly found that for anything other than the basics the laptop was pretty worthless. I don't need a heavy hitter but I would like something with a little more graphic capabilities.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm going to go look at them right now. Is the GeForce to be used with the existing card or to replace?

I'm trying to find the cord to link video cards, so if this isn't a combo but a stand alone I can stop digging in this huge box of spare cords, cables and thingies :)

Either DVI or HDMI, doesn't make a ton of difference to me. I don't own speakers I use my gaming headset so HDMI isn't a must, not sure what other differences they might have...sorry, pretty computer illiterate

Thanks, I have tons of HDMI, not sure why. Loving the Amazon choices since I have Prime it makes it easier not to have to pay shipping. Really do appreciate the input.

Will the Gforce be an upgrade or can it double with the original, if I place both will I need a larger power supply (although from that I'm reading the Graphics card is low usage).

Checking out where I can purchase the CPU :)

Picks look great, would like to ask about the memory choice, why not just buy more of the same memory type? Thanks so much for keeping it within the budget, might even swing an external HD to store all my SVG's and fonts. Who knows maybe I'll fall in love with my desktop again and forget wanting to use my laptop for target practice.

Not sure anyone wants it..lol really does suck. Tried for 3 days to upgrade to Win 10 and finally had to walk away before I did damage to it. About the only thing you can do on it is answer emails or play solitaire.
