Hi guys,

So for xmas and my 30th the missus is going to aid with some funds for a new computer upgrade. I have a build in mind, I will list below. I play games occasionally when I get time, do a lot of work on Photoshop and some editing. I don't mind if my build is overkill as I like to leave room for the future. Firstly, I will list my current pretty basic setup, then my new one which im ready to purchase, but just looking some other peoples thoughts before I purchase the new components.

Current Build
AMD FX-6350
Gigabyte 970a ud3p
GTX 1050 Ti
8gb Hyper X Fury Ram
1 TB WD HDD
Hyper Evo 212 Cooler

Planned Build
i7 7700k
Asus ROG Strix z270e
GTX 1070
16b Corsair Vengence
250gb Samsung EVO SSD
4TB Seagate Barracuda HDD
NZXT Kraken Liquid Cooling

better off getting i7 8700k + Z370 mobo

if u're not looking for a high refresh rate monitor / the budget aren't that big, Ryzen can also be another solution for you

perhaps something like R7 1700 + B350 Mobo

both have better upgrade path [though ryzen is more assuring if we're talking about upgrade path] and will have longer lifespan thanks to the extra core/threads count

I would suggest a i5-8600k with one of the z370 Mobos, its comparable to the 7700k for gaming and offers better performance for multi-core applications. The 8700k is overkill for most, maybe if your doing 4k or CPU intensive multi-core applications then it would be a worthwhile investment.

he did say he doesn't mind if the build is overkill XD

Thanks for the replies guys. I should have said I would like to go with Intel this time round.

I was hoping the 7700k would be more than enough for what I need, but do you reckon for the future I should go with the 8700 with a z370 or would the z270 and 7700 be sufficient for a few more years yet? A different mobo and cpu is going to sting an extra 200 or so on top of what I was hoping for.. Although I'm not limited as such as I have money aside for this, I just want to be sure if it's necessary.

Many thanks

the next 3-5 years should be fine with 7700k, though lemme remind u, there's no upgrade path for that 7th gen, the 8th gen might have better chance in having an upgrade path XD [although intel's habit of changing socket might ruin that chance]
there's also minor IPC improvement and better overclocking power [as most 8th gen CPU can reach 5 GHz easily]

if the app demands more cores, then yes, the extra physical core would benefit you
if the app prioritize IPC [like most games today for example], then the performance difference would be pretty small

no it's not necessary, let's just say in this case "u get what u pay for" XD

OK, that makes it a bit more clearer. I might play around later then and see where I can amend and put in the 8700 with a z370.

A think, the big thing for me is, 3 years down the line and a new cpu comes out etc I'd like to be fit to pop one straight into the mobo and not have to worry about having more things to replace.

AMD's AM4 Socket will last at least till 2020 [or so AMD says] but since u want Intel this time around, i can't say XD u know how Intel works XD [i mean, we got LGA 775, 1155, 1150, 1151, and now 1151v2 XD] dunno about the icelake next year :) might use an entire new socket :)

I have changed my mind and have now bought the 1700x, I have made a new thread in the motherboards section for some help on a good pairing of ram and mobo.

Thanks all for your advice.
