I'm noticing my CPU is bottle-necking more and more games such as ArmA 3 and Planetside 2 along with many CPU intensive games. I wan't to upgrade my CPU and sadly I'm limited to a AMD CPU. I don't want to spend over £150 ideally and not too power hungry as I have a 550W PSU. Suggestions?

Specs
CPU: AMD FX-6100 3.3GHz
PSU: XFX PRO550W
RAM: 16.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 669MHz (9-9-9-24)
Motherboard: ASUSTeK Computer INC. M5A78L-M/USB3 (AM3R2)
Graphics: 2048MB ATI AMD Radeon R9 200 Series (Sapphire/PCPartner)
Storage: 931GB Seagate ST1000DM003-9YN162 ATA Device (SATA)
OS: Win7 64bit

Solution
Your board is low quality one,not heat sinks to cool off VRM when they heat up and probably have low power phase like 4+1 which is low and only good for max 95W TDP Cpu.You have good PSU.Intel is better atm and you have upgrade path so let say you get this i3 now and later when you have more money you can get i5 or i7 and stronger GPU since it will support newest Intel CPU that will come out later this year. And check this Planetside 2 CPU benchmark

Just see how much more i5 is better then any AMD CPU,and I3 is just above strongest AMD one.
IF you want to be more rdy for future games and get best in current one you can get this

FX 6100 is also not that bad CPU. I guess your motherboard is holding you back. Upgrade to a 990FX or so first. However, if that's the case, I would suggest you to go Intel route instead but again it will cost you.

It will help you in Arma and Planetside ALLOT since they like strong single core performance what AMD dont have and it is within you price range of 150 GBP.

Hmm I keep getting suggested to switch to Intel may i ask why my board would be unable to handle the new CPU? Plus is my PSU a issue at all?

Slight over budget but it will pay off and you will see huge increase in FPS both Arma and Planetside 2

Right well TBH if i need to replace my MOBO I don't want to go too much over £200 and it would need to be enough for my PSU to handle it all otherwise i would have to replace that AS WELL. Should I?

Right well so staying at around 200 or so pounds what would be the best future proofed MOBO/Intel CPU I can get I was thinking of a CPU such as the intel Core i5 3470 @ 3.2GHZ (4 CPUs) .

Well your speaking a foreign language to me m8! Yeah I guess I will go with a CPU like that but what is the future proofed MOBO recommendation?
