I have a GTX460 and my son says it's not good enough to play his games on.
What's a good but cost-effective card to upgrade to?
Will the GTX 1050 Ti be a much better card?
Happy to look at second hand cards too on ebay, etc, if that will be better value?

Up to a gtx 1060 is good for your build anything else will mean overclocking the cpu to make it not bottleneck th gpu a lot. I would recommend a 2*4 or 4*4 ram kit as mix and matching ram can work but it can also have problems.

What are the rest of your systems specs? Especially the psu is important (brand, wattage, age,..).

CPU Core i7 920 D0
MB ASUS P6X58D-E
GPU 1GB GAINW GTX460 GoldenSample
RAM Corsair 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 1600
PSU 650W ANTEC TRUEPOWER NEW PSU

I am looking to upgrade the RAM too (once I figure out what RAM I can buy for the other 3 free slots - do I have to fill all together or can I just add one 4Gb stick?)

The gtx 750ti is outdated I recommend a gtx 1050ti or rx 470 as those are 2-3x more powerfull than the 750ti and around the same price usually.
