Upgrade from GTX970 worth it?

There is probally a lot of "should I upgrade?" posts around, but I hope I can get some help.

I am currently speculating if I should upgrade only my GPU to something better.

SPECS:
-GPU: GTX970
-CPU: i7-4770k
-RAM: 16 gb DDR3
-PSU: 650W
-MOBO: Asus Z87-K
-Monitor: 1440p, 144HZ, Gsync

I am unsure if the rest of my system can handle a GTX1080TI, since I hope to pick up a used one when RTX hits the market.

Can anyone help clarify whether my system can handle the GTX1080TI, and if not, what other upgrades to do first.

Your current PC can properly treat the GTX 1080 Ti in most games. However in the very demanding CPU games you will experience a certain bottlelneck.

The fact that your monitor is 1440P favors your CPU because it charges the GPU more.

Of course I would get much better gaming experience than at present.

In case you would like to update your CPU to deal with any kind of games without problems you should change the three elements memory (DDR4), mobo and CPU.

If you choose intel a possibility would be I7-8700K and if it were AMD Ryzen 7 2700X

In all cas I think the correct thing is to change the GPU first since it will get more improvement than changing the CPU + mobo + DDR4

depends on which 1080ti you get. if you have the 8+8pin variant, you will be very close to the 500W sweetspot of 650W-PSU.

unless you plan to SLI, your system should run fine with 1080ti.

It will work for now but get a higher quality one next time you upgrade.

Also, install 3-4 high CFM fans if your case doesn't have good airflow. We don't want anything overheating as 1080 Ti will increase power usage/heat by another 100W.

the general recommendation for single card 1080ti the system psu is 650W and for two card 1080ti SLI 900W, if you don't overclock your CPU. add another 100W or so if you plan to heavily overclock.
