Hi guys,

I did my first and only build about a year or 2 ago and now I'm looking to upgrade my gtx980 to either a 1070 or rtx2060. My rig is currently a i7 4770k, running on base clock because I've been unable to overclock it successfully. Could have something to do with my choice of ram as it appears I can't enable XMP profile on these : HyperX HX318C10F/8 FURY Series 8 GB DDR3 1866 MHz CL10 DIMM Memory Module × 2 (16GB)
Which should I switch to considering I only use my rig for flight simulation such as Prepar3d and X plane 11? Also, do I need to change my memory? If yes, any recommendations?
Mobo: black edition gigabyte z97x-ud5h-bk
Thanking you in advance for any help.

I will go with the RTX 2060 since is faster than the GTX 1070 and it cost around the same.
At stock speed the i7 4770k might not take full advantage of the RTX 2060.
At which speed is the RAM working?
In which slots are the RAM module located?
Have you run any RAM tests?

Thanks for your response. I'm running everything at stick speed, I honestly cant remember what slots but I did check on the manual which slots to use and I'm sure they are on the correct slots. Also, I didn't do any ram tests, I'll try that. Thanks.

I am running at 1080, what would you recommend

Honestly, stay with your current card.

The 1070 performs slightly better than the 980, and the 2060 slightly better than the 1070.

But at 1920x1080 resolution, if your monitor is, say, only 60Hz or 75Hz, then it can't display more than 60 or 75 frames per second. You would get no benefit from going to a faster video card.

Really? Huh... I've been told by some that 4GB on the 980 isn't enough to run flight simulator, I wanted to update to 8GB but then I read a review that the 2060 out performs the 1070.

I'd say save up money now and down the road build a new PC :) Once the AAA games are becoming issues; stuttering, fps issues, and things of that nature, then you should upgrade.
That's makes sense, I'll hold off on the upgrade till I'm ready to upgrade the entire system them. Thanks everyone for very useful and quick response. Very much appreciated once again

I had to rebuild my PC that is only 2 years old.. ended up getting a new case and everything. Went from FX-9590 to Ryzen 2700x two months ago. It's amazing how fast technology advances and just a tip for you: do A TON of research before digging into specific parts. There is good and bad with hardware no matter what. Good luck to you!

The general consensus appears to be to hold off on the upgrade as there isn't much to benefit from such at the moment unless I'm willing to upgrade the entire system. Thanks everyone for very useful and quick response. Very much appreciated once again
