Hello guys. I want to ask a question. I've been using my PC fine these 3 years, i have i3 8100, but lately started to shows its age since its only 4c/4t no HT. The option is to go to 9400f but since its also a 6c/6t cpu and since either doesnt have a HT, will be there any improvements?

Any improvement?
Yes. Particularly if you need more threads.
But likely, you will not be impressed.
Your i3-8100 has 4 threads and a passmark rating of 6143. That is when all 4 threads are 100% busy.
The single thread rating is 2242. Single thread rating is arguably the more important metric for gaming.
The I5-9400F has 6 threads and a rating of 9542/2482.
A modest improvement.
It sells for about $80 on ebay.
What is the make/model of your motherboard?
Likely, it could support a processor as strong as a I7-9700K with 8 threads and a rating of 14561/2909. It goes for $220 on ebay.

Well my mobo is H310m-D. Yeah i know it is low end. I'm probably better for full upgrade

In truth, I would not take the 8400 off the list of consideration, based on availability and price.

I still have in use a system based on that CPU being used for office work. I had been gifted an 8600K and when considering which one I was going to send down the road the real world performance between the two wasn't enough to justify the effort of swapping them out. Even in modern "vs" comparisons staying with even 10th gen i3 or i5 there is still very little difference between them as far as performance. Moving up to 12/13th gen is still so price prohibitive as compared to performance uplift that I have not deemed that worthwhile either, yet....
