My motherboard died on me, so it's time to upgrade. I was hoping to wait to see what the next gen of AMD has to offer, but that is now not an option. What I'm thinking is:

Purchase an AMD chip that is comparable to i5-4690k performance, and paying as little as I need to now. (As I plan to upgrade anyways fairly soon).
Purchase a motherboard that will be compatible with the next gen of AMD chips coming out, in case I want to upgrade that. The MB I can splurge on since I'd like it to be able to upgrade to PCIe 4.0.

I'll have to also upgrade my DDR3 ram, but that's not really an issue.

Suggestions are very much appreciated.

Thank you.

The 1st gen Ryzen have been on sale (and used market) for around and sometimes under 100 USD lately, so your best bet would be to get a B450 or X470 MB and a Ryzen 1600 or 1700. You'll need new DDR4 RAM and kleep in mind Ryzen especially the 1st gen do perform much better with 3000mhz or faster RAM (3200 seems to be the sweet spot for price/performance).
