Question Upgrade from i5-8400 to 12th or 13th gen

I feel like it is time to upgrade from cpu i5-8400 (which I have from 2018) but I am wondering how far to go - I would like to reuse my DDR4 (though bit old - 32GB Corsair Vengeance LPX / CL15 / 3000mhz) and will be still using 3060ti (at least for year or two).
I was thinking about two options:

option AOption B
Asus TUF Gaming B660M-Plus Wifi D4240 EURAsus TUF Gaming B760M-Plus WIFI D4270 EUR
i5-12400f220 EURi5-13400f280 EUR
new CPU cooler50 EUR
460 EUR600 EUR

Benefit of option A is that I can use my current CPU cooler BeQuite! Pure Rock 2 Slim which should be well enough for 12400f. So option A is approximately 140 EUR cheaper than option B. But B is more recent and maybe more "future proof"...? But is it really giving that much more performance so it would be worth it that 140 EUR? :)

I would like to use new set up another 4-5 years again.

I do some light programming (java, c#) and then causal gaming - rather simulation and strategy games e.g. Cities: Skylines, Civ 6 .... but of course I like to spend time with games like RDR2, Far Cry or Assassin's Creed too. I play in 1440p but I am not in rush for 140 fps or something like that :)

I'll be grateful for any advice :)

P.S. My MOBO pick is based on good reviews and that it has wifi and suitable set of USB ports for me.

edit: i am choosing between 12400f and 13400f actually.

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

Where are you located? Preferred site for purchase?

I'd go option B, since you retain the iGPU and you're on latest gen tech. the iGPU does come in handy during troubleshooting scenarios when your discrete GPU has an issue or your PSU is incapable of powering all parts while a discrete GPU is in the build.

I would be buying in Sweden - so prices are roughly converted to EUR from SEK.

I haven’t been thinking about these scenarios where iGPU would be useful… that is a good point.

How sure are you that your old cooler would be inadequate on a 13400?

I'd probably try the old cooler and evaluate, particularly if on a budget. How it will perform is largely speculation at this point.

current cooler has TDP 130W but 13400f can go up to 148W - that is why I am thinking it is inadequate.

Either of these boards will run 12 and 13 gen cpu's. These boards allow for updating to the latest bios in order to run 13 gen cpu's without installing the cpu, RAM and gpu with Gigabytes Q-Flash Plus.

The I5-13400/f will come with an adequate stock cooler.
I would give that a try first.
LGA1700 brought a new mounting system.
Your old cooler will not work.
Not only are the holes a bit wider, but the cpu height is lower, requiring adjustments in the mounting system to get the right pressure. Some cooler vendors are offering free or cheap lga1700 mounting upgrades. IDK about BQ.
If you want a very good cheap cooler, look at the thermalright peerless assassin:

As to performance, the 13400 will have better single thread performance which is what I think you(the op) wants.
Run the CPU-Z bench test on your i5-8400. You should get a score about 450:
https://valid.x86.fr/bench/5eb68r
The 12400 will be 660; the 13400 will be 715.

You can save a bit using the asus B660M motherboard.
It has been out for a while and will include the newest bios updates to be able to run 13th gen.
Such updates were released on 08/2022 so new stock will have the 13th gen enabling updates.

The f suffix designates the absence of integrated graphics.
I would pay perhaps $25 more to get integrated graphics.
It is invaluable in diagnosing any discrete gpu issues.
The integrated graphics will be a bit faster than what you have on your i7-8400.
