I have had my i7 920 for a couple of years, bought this PC with the 920 in it, overclocked it and threw a 970 in there. Has been good to me for a couple of years. But would upgrading to a i5 7600k give me improvements in gaming? Also my i7 920 is overlocked to 4.04GHz.

Probably not as much as you're hoping for. Tom's CPU Hierarchy chart only ranks the i7-970 two tiers below the i5-7600k. But the i5-7600k can probably be OC'ed quite a bit more than the i7-970. So there's that. An improvement? Yes. A great improvement? Maybe not so much.

I had a Xeon W3670 (i7-970 equivalent). It scored a Firestrike score of 11,240 with a GTX 980. My i5-7600 (non-K) scored 11,254 with the same card. Obviously, everything was at stock clocks.

nah man... at this point as clutchc said.. there aint much reason for you to go out and upgrade. As well as, YEAH.. it would provide some gains.. but worth it? not that much.........

Really if you want to upgrade.. you should wait to get yourself somethign more along the tier of 8600k. This chip really changed quite a few things in the hardware world (as far as choosing your CPU).

all of the 7th Gen CPUs are going on insane sales! and that';s only because 8th gen DESTROYS them! (this is in comparison to the past... waht... 4-6 years? where performance only inccreased by 8-12% at a time? and now we have an i3 that's 4core? it just jumped to i5 old gen tier!)

so yea.... wait a bit longer. get the new stuff, it's actually wroth it

I might try to see if I can possibly get a i5 8600k close to the retail price, because right now they are going for around $295 which is too much in my opinion. Maybe Cyber monday I will be able to get some cheap deals. I definitely do agree that the 8th gen line is better now that the i5s have 6 cores. But I just feel that I could get more out of my 970 if I upgraded and I would also be setting my self up for in the future if I choose to invest into a high range card.

I think you have to wait a couple of months until the price stabilizes... right now they are New chips.. and right around Christmas time (coincidence? I doubt it), They'll hold their price close to their current one, until some time after the holiday season (which would be right around when the new nVidia cards come out). They are quite worth it.. but if you have a comfortable system.. then I wouldn't rush it. they'll come down. We're also waiting for ram price to come down too.. it's insanse... more than double of what it was a year ago... and from suggested reports it was supposed to start going back down for christmas season.. but here we are.. still F-ing high.. it's all for more profit..... wait a little, it'll be better for your wallet.

The question is not if your upgrade would benifit you... because many little upgrade CAN.

Honestly, as you said, it's 8 years old. If you feel to upgrade, go for it, we have some great options available to us TODAY. But, you will pay a little more just because it's "New and Exciting. if you don`t care about that, by all means go for it, you`ll be very happy with your new upgrade.

Just don`t forget to factor in windows 10, since the neweer CPUs don`t work on anything lower than that.

I think im going to see how prices fluctuate, I heard that Intel opened a new facility in China so that they can increase the supply for 8th gen CPUs. And yeah I for sure use windows 10, I retired windows 7 a couple of years ago.
