Upgrade from xp2600 to xp3200 worthwhile?

Hi all,

I´m thinking if i should upgrade my cpu from the current xp2600 to an xp3200 before buying a complete new system later or if i should keep the 200 euro´s for something more worthwhile?
What kind of performance gain can i expect?

system:
MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR
Athlon XP 2600+
2x512 Mb Kingston 400
MSI FX5900 XT VTD128
and a lot of other stuff.

Your AMD 2600+, is it a Barton (333 Mhz, 512 Kb L2 cache), or is it a Throughbred (333/266 Mhz)? Please let us know or use this utility to find out the details.

Now, if it is a Barton 2600+ at 333 Mhz 512 Kb cache, with that motherboard you can safely do some overclocking and get up to 2700+ mark or more. However, the 3200+ has 400 Mhz FSB and 512 kb cache, so that will definitely go very well with your RAM and you will definitely see a performance difference, especially if your present processor, the 2600+ is a Throughbred. Even if your present CPU is a Barton, core there will be a difference in speed/perfomance. However, if you are willing to wait (as I would), then go for 64-bit, AMD64.
 
i think it is a thorougbred running at 12.5 x 166 (2083 mhz).
I was hoping that with the coming of the 64 bit version prices would drop to about 100 euro´s but so fat no sign of that.
 
Well, if it is a Throughbred, then a Barton XP3200+ will be quite a lot of difference because your Throughbred only runs at 333 Mhz and has only 256 kb L2 cache(make sure it is not a Throughbred at 2133 Mhz), while the 3200+ will run at 400 Mhz and has 512 kb cache.

I strongly disagree with you. I have an XP 2400+ and I am not considering uprading to anything. I think it's better to save my money and buy an A64 3000+, don't forget that price cuts for lower clocked A64s are on their way. For an A64 system a person using now a Socket A processor can keep his/her memory and only replace the motherboard & CPU. I believe that in this scenario the money spent/performance gained ratio will be much better than giving away 200 Euros for an XP 3200+.
 
The gains I noticed from going 2500ish to 3200 speeds was noticeable, but small. Boot up times a little faster, noway worth 200 Euros, not even a 100 Euros.

yeah it's worth it. i went from a 2.8B to a 3.0e and that was worth it. $269 usd upgrade. OF course i was getting a lot more than just a 200mhz speed bump.

i got hyperthreading, 1mb cache, intel's new 90nm process, 800fsb, and prestige.

Bragging about your 1MB cache makes you look foolish when the 3.0E is still a lesser performer than the 3.0C with 512k. Bragging about 90nm makes you look foolish when Intel has such bad gate leakage problems on most of their 90nm processors that they consume more power and produce more heat than the 130nm versions.

i have an xp2600 which is a tbred core....
I have no experience if its the barton core but iv'e overclocked my chip to 12.5*175 (or 180 altho that gets unstable) which is good enough (although ive heard it can go further) and unlike what Johy said in his post thats way past an xp2700 and is what? around yur wanted xp3200 levels (altho i havent looked at the figures for ages so dont quote me).

Now back to the facts.... when I clock my machine back down to stock levels I cant say I notice any difference between stock and o/c'd except i score more points in benchmarks and im prob getting a few more fps in games.....

my advice would be if your have some pc3200 ram in yur machine (you will need pc3200 ram to overclock) and you know what yur doing when yur in the bios settings then try an overclock... its dead simple to do and despite the warnings of "frying your chip" it didnt happen to me and id never done it before.

otherwise if you dont have pc3200 ram and as is most likely you have pc2700 or arent great at messing about in yur bios setting then leave it and save yur money for a bigger and better upgrade later down the line.

EDIT: its also worth pointing out that if u want to upgrade to an xp3200 u will also need to purchase PC3200 ram as chances are yur machine only has pc2700 which makes yur upgrade even less desirable....

Totally not worth the money. Overclock your XP2600+ or make do until a full system wide upgrade. The XP3200+ is a bad buy PERIOD, never mind upgrading from an XP2600+. For half the price of an XP3200+, you could buy a mobile XP2500+, which could easily hit 2.2GHz (XP3200+) speeds. With a good mobo/heatsink/fan some hit 2.6GHz or beyond.

Don't buy the 3200. There is a performance difference and a notable one, just not for the money when you could just do it for free.

ok guys, i wont do the upgrade then.

I do have pc3200 btw (Kingston valueram) so overclocking is something i could try!

Only concern i have is that my CPU temp is often at 65 degrees celcius as it is. Before putting a second fan in my case it went over 70 and my bios alarm went of :-(.

So overclocking it could mean the return of that problem...
 
65c for a normal running xp2600 is wrong wrong wrong unless yur in hell... anyway if those numbers are correct id:
A:double chk u have yur heatsink connecting with cpu
B: make sure u have enough thermal grease.
C: invest a coupla of quid in a good cooler

my O/C'd xp2600 with a spire falconrock2 cooler and 2 case fans never tops 53c and thats now in summer in a tiny room with no air flow. when not overclocked it runs at 40 to 45c and with a noisy bastard coolermaster fan on it it drops to around 35c although the coolermaster spins at 6000 rpm plus and sounds like a jet engine so i stick with the spire.
