Upgrade G4560 to i5-7500 now or wait for new Ryzen CPUs?

I got an H110 office system that I'm doing some low end gaming on with a GT 1030. I'm happy with the performance for now as I'm not upgrading my GPU anyways because of prices. But if I were to upgrade the CPU, should I get the i5 now (175€) or wait for next gen Ryzen and switch the platform?

Well, depends on your budget. Shifting to Ryzen would mean that you have to change motherboard as well, though you would get a future proof base system. The Ryzen`s internal graphics would performs as good or better than the 1030 and some RX 560 cards.

But I do have the 1030 and the motherboard. Also I think the 7500 would be good for a couple years given that few games really benefit from more than 4 cores. Am I right? Also I have a 300W PSU, albeit a quality one. I wouldn't want to use a CPU with a TDP higher than 65W.

Well then, give the constraints you just answered the question. Go with the i5 that is compatible with your motherboard. That is the best value as a cpu upgrade.

I'm just wondering if an i5 is overkill for light gaming or not. With what I do now I'll probably see very little gains. On the other hand when I decide to get a GPU of the next generation with a TDP of 75W like what the 1050 TI does now, I'll be able to do AAA-gaming with this rig without having to change either mobo or PSU.

For gaming you gain a lot with 4 physical cores. There are very few games that require more though. The 1050ti would not be bottlenecked by the G4560 but the i5 will also not hurt the performance.

I decided to get a 1050 TI for the same price as the i5-7500. Getting a better GPU just makes more sense. I might switch to a better CPU and AM4 once Ryzen 2 CPUs are out in the price range of about 150€. Thanks for the feedback!
