Hello I have a Gateway SX1120G and the CPU is bad but I need to know what CPU I have. I am wondering if I can Put a Intel core duo in it

thank you

I can't seem to find much info off of a Google search. You could try and take off the cooling assembly and then take off the thermal paste using isopropyl alcohol and a paper towel or a coffee filter(strainer). Parse images across this thread for us to see if you can't decipher what you're looking at.

Ok but don't you need to put thermal paste back on??

Yes, after you install a new one, you WILL have to put paste back on....

As for the replacement cpu, what will work will depend on the socket type/size etc. Most older intel boards were good for 2, maybe 3, generational upgrades of cpu's, but not all of them....

But honestly, for such an old rig, I would not bother, unless you just can't afford a new machine atm :)

Its running win 10

Doesn't matter what OS it runs, I know people that have 6, 8 , & 10 year old machines that are running W10 too....but what I was getting at was

  1. Availability & cost of a cpu that will work in that machine
  2. Cost vs. performance ratio of upgrading an old machine vs. building /buying a new one
  3. Life expectancy of the original mobo going forward

ANY new machine you build now, even a low-mid budget one, will far exceed the performance & available features of your current machine, and provide for more future-looking possibilities in terms of upgrades and replacement parts.
