Upgrade Gateway sx2800 Processor?

Hi! I'm looking to upgrade my gateway (sx2800) processor, (Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 @ 2.33GHz). (Mother Board is an Acer WG43M).

I was wondering what I'd have to go through to upgrade the processor to something like an i3 and if it'd even be worth it. (Reason I'm saying i3 is because it's very close to my budget of around $100 (Variance of $20))

I upgraded the PSU and the GPU (now a 1gb low profile sapphire hd5570)

Nope. Your board supports Core 2 not Core i. You have much much older stuff there.

You will need a new motherboard, CPU and RAM.

I have some bigger cases lying around.. can I take and remount most of the stuff in the sx2800 in a bigger case with a new board? Never tried mounting a slim line into a standard case. Also, if you don't mind, do you have any recommendations for a good board?

No you cant reuse anything. Maybe the hard drive. That's it. Your PSU will be underpowered crap and the RAM will be the wrong kind of RAM.

You need to buy everything new except for your hard drive basically.

How much do you want to spend on a new computer and what do you want to do with the computer?

I have a better PSU and GPU than the one that came with it so those could potentially be compatible? Planning on using it as a well rounded pc. Light gaming, work (programming, etc) and probably some rendering.. As for price I can save up for a while but the cheaper the better really

If you dont tell me what GPU and what PSU you have we wont get anywhere. Also, that board is quite bad, and is 2 generations old. You want Z97 or H97 socket 1150 not 1155.

GPU is this, can't remember the PSU atm but I'm most likely replacing it soon anyway now that I think about it.. its fan started to get obnoxious lately lol

That doesn't even qualify as a GPU in my eyes. 1GB? No. Pick up a GTX 750Ti for gaming absolute bare minimum. More ideal would be an R9 280. Those are $129/$180 respectively in USD.

how much do you want to spend on the full system?

When I mean light gaming, I mean very light gaming. I only game here and there now, and I picked up a cheap 360 so that tends to satisfy most of my needs. I have about $100 I could drop this minute, obviously that's not much so I'd probably build it over time / save up for a while. Is this board more worth?

Save up $750 and then come back and get parts advice. Only fools buy a PC piecemeal.

Did you even bother to read my post? Sorry, we don't all live in luxury buddy. I have to support multiple people in college right now. Never said I wanted to run theuniverse.exe on my pc. I didn't want to judge you at first from the way you typed your replies but honestly, you word things like your way better than everyone just because you're the one answering a question.

Well, it kind of is the total, actually. PC build advise is good for 2 weeks, and then it's useless. New parts come out constantly. If you wait until June new CPUs and GPUs will be out too, making any build advise we give you now useless. Hence my frustration with this thread.

Buying a piece at a time is also a fool's pursuit as by the time you finish you have a "brand-new", out-of-date and nearly out-of-warranty set of parts. What good is a CPU or power supply to you if it just sits in your closet? Might as well buy a nice lamp or one of those royal doulton dolls or something that's nice to look at instead.

Come back when you have saved up $750++ USD or more and we can put a good system together for you that you will buy within 2 weeks of said thread.

Come back with $15000 then tell us that a 5570 isn't a good card, NOOB.

And explain how HD 5570 is a piece of ****. I bet you've also never hacked a Radeon into a FirePro, much less a GeForce into a Quadro. HD 5570 is probably able to play a few games still on low settings, better than a GT 210.

Okay, let's all calm down a little bit. Words of life!😀 Anyway, I knew I wasn't crazy. 5570 is able to play 99% of the games I want it to, and for many of them at even medium and high settings! (payday 1&2, HaloCE/Online, Quake, Skyrim, nfsw, etc) and when it comes to PC I really don't waver to much from those games. (Hence why it isn't important to me to purchase the latest hardware, I just wouldn't use it).

Okay, now that the troll is gone, let's get the job done. And yes, I've done Hackintosh, dealt with quite a few puzzling BSODs, purposely bricked my phone. For other expertises, check out all my posts. ;-) Sorry if I sound like I'm bragging.

As for you finding upgrade, I am not sure if this one works because of your BIOS. Gateway may not release a CPU microcode for newer generation CPUs. But let's just see if it works...

Cool, definitely not a bad price either! Sorry for the late response, went on a brief holiday. Is this one compatible with the motherboard and case or do I still need to purchase one?

I believe it'll be compatible with the motherboard, but it'll be SUPER hard to predict because Gateway pulled off any possible information on their products, so it's just worth a shot.
