Upgrade GPU or build new PC?

Hi, I'm wondering what would be best for my situation. I currently have Windows 7, an Intel 870 i7, 8gb RAM, 650 watt XFX PSU and a GTX 780 3GB with an ultra wide 1440p display.

Do you think I should just go ahead and get a new PC since my CPU is quite old or would upgrading my GPU to either a GTX 1060 6gb or a GTX 1070 give me a worthy performance boost for 1440p ultra-wide gaming?

Solution

60 fps 1440p should still be doable in most games if you do oc that 870 if not I would recommend upgrading the system since it will hold back both of those cards at stock speed (might even be holding your current 780 back in some games).

Your CPU will handle a GTX 1060 no problem with no bottleneck, but if you want a GTX 1070 then I would recommend building a new machine.

I still have my older I7 870 machine with a RX 480 8GB and it handles things just fine and I am talking new AAA games like Rise Of the Tomb Raider and GTA 5.

But if you want to go with a GTX 1070 and 1440P then build new.

Do you think a jump from a 780 to a 1060 will be worth it since i'm already on the fence about building a new PC? If I could get by with a 1060 for a year or two with 1440p and 60 fps and high/ultra high settings I'd do that.

You might be able to do high... maybe....

A GTX 1070 would be better though.
