I just got a Samsung S22B150 21.5 inch HD monitor with a native resolution of 1920 x 1080. I had no idea it would not work with my computer, but it seems that the integrated graphics card on my Dell Inspiron 580 does not support any monitor resolution above 1024 x 768. I tried downloading an update to the Intel graphics card, but it made no difference. I managed to enter 1920 x 1080 under custom resolution and it is somewhat better, but it still leaves black spaces at both sides of the monitor and things don't quite look right.

I'm not a gamer--I just want to be able to utilize the monitor's capabilities, but I'm not sure how to find a graphics card that is compatible with my system without having to upgrade the power supply (my computer only has a 300 watt power supply and I see that many graphics card need a minimum of 400?).

Can anyone tell me some specific cards that should work without having to upgrade any other components?

Thanks,

Get a HD 5450 $30 or a HD 7750 $100. Both will work with your 300Watts PSU. HD 7750 is a much better card if you can get upto the budget of $100. Although the card requirement says it needs 400watts or more but it runs fine on 300watts setup.
Just remember to disable your Intel integrated graphics in your bios.

Thanks,

There is a good deal on the 5450 on TigerDirect, but this is a low-profile card and my computer is a full size tower--can I still use a low profile card?

Yes you can use a low profile card.
