Ok so I currently have an i5-6400 @2.7Ghz (quad core). I want to be able to play Division 2, without dropping everything to low/off. So I was thinking of upgrading to an i7, but that's around $300+ Then I thought i5-8400 (6 core) and a new mobo.

Then I found https://pcpartpicker.com/list/wjvrmq

So I guess I'm asking, Ryzen 5 2600 VS i5-8400 for gaming, thoughts?

My current GPU is a Nvidia 1050 2Gb.
Now someone is telling me to just upgrade my GPU instead of CPU.
I can only afford to upgrade one or the other currently.

What is your motherboard?
There are some viable cpu upgrades available for lga1151.

I suspect that a graphics card upgrade may be more effective.

Try this simpleminded test:
Run YOUR games, but lower your resolution and eye candy.
If your FPS increases, it indicates that your cpu is strong enough to drive a better graphics configuration.
If your FPS stays the same, you are likely more cpu limited.

Yeah I thought about upgrading to that one actually. But it's around $300 just for that alone.
For the same price I could go the Ryzen route with a new mobo, or get an upgraded GPU. So I'm stuck as to which I should do to get the best performance boost.
I think my 1050 2Gb GPU may be holding me back the most.

I strongly suggest you to upgrade your Graphic card instead of CPU. Your CPU is capable to handle 1060 even 1070. So get a 1060 or RX 580 It will definitely give a good gaming experience

I have a friend who says get a 1070, one said go big and get a RTX 2060.
Do you have a suggestion on what I should get?
