upgrade help required

I am currently looking for a new mobo and cpu that would pair nicely with my 1070.

I currently have a I5 4460 and am looking to ditch the bottleneck.

any suggestions for a new CPU and MOBO, capable of providing good AAA FPS performance would be greatly appreciated.

budget isn't really an issue.

If you want the absolute best around, I'd get the i7 8700k and one of these two motherboards

There are many other good motherboards out there though. If you want to spend less and get very very similar performance the i5 8600k is an option. For both of these CPUs to get the most out of them you'll need a pretty nice cooler. What case do you have, and are you ok with AIO cooling loops?

Honestly If It was me, I'd just game on the i5 4460. It's not really that far behind. For the most part, It will still take full advantage of the GTX 1070. a CPU upgrade would probably give you better productivity performance over gaming.

You're right that the 4460 isn't a huge bottleneck, but he will see a fair boost in performance. I've got a 4670k and a 1070 in my rig, and can see gains going from stock boost (3.6Ghz on all cores) to 4.0Ghz on all cores. Far Cry 5 really gains a lot here. His CPU has a maximum single core turbo of 3.6Ghz, so all core turbo is lower. The 8700k has a max turbo of 4.7Ghz, and you can pretty easily make all cores run that quick without overclocking. An upgrade from a 4 generation old 4c/4t 3.6Ghz CPU to a 6c/12t 4.7Ghz CPU will be a pretty large jump.

There is some gain to be had going from 4 core to 4 core 8 thread. I would think the 8600K 6/6 would be better than 4/8

1060 6GB wants a quad core
1070/1080 responds to more threads. 4/8, 6/6, or 6/12

Though, new cpu and new board also needs new RAM. 4th gen uses DDR3, 6th gen and up use DDR4.

The higher the monitor resolution, the less CPU is being utilized also. If he were to game on 1440p with that 1070, Performance is likely to be identical to those of a 4/8, 6/6, or 6/12.

I'd buy a new monitor with 1440p 144hz, before I bought a new CPU,Motherboard, RAM.
