I have an HP Pavillion m7100e that's about 5 yrs old. I would like to upgrade the CPU. It is an AMD Athlon 64 3200+, 2.0 ghz.

First, how do I tell what mobo I have? I've looked inside but see no markings. I don't see anything under System Properties either. Or is it irrelevant, and assuming the current CPU is an AM2, just find the faster Am2 chip?

Thanks!

It looks as if you have a HP AMD 939 socket motherboard. In which case you're really going to have trouble upgrading your CPU. You may be able to find a deal at eBay. They used 3 different motherboards for the m7100e, you'll be able to compare from this link to see which one you have.

*EDIT* when i ran into this problem on a friends 939 system that he wanted to upgrade i just built a new PC.

thanks for the replies. i have just built myself a x2 555, m4a79xtd evo. since I've done that, I'd like to upgrade this old HP for the kids. was hoping to drop in a cheap dual core or something, but not sure what works in this mobo.

according to belarc, the mobo is: Board: ASUSTek Computer INC. Amberine 1.02
Bus Clock: 200 megahertz
BIOS: Phoenix Technologies, LTD 3.04 07/06/2005

Too old to upgrade even for kids computer?

This one is good :)
