Upgrade i5 6500 to i5 8600k?

I'm trying to decide If the upgrade from a i5 6500 to a i5 8600k would be worth it.

The CPU is getting older IMO and is showing its age in newer games that require more CPU power like AC Origins (100% CPU usage constantly) causing my 1060 to be bottlenecked

Current Specs

CPU - I5 6500
GPU - GTX 1060 6GB
Ram - 16GB DDR4
MotherBoard - Gigabyte Z170X Gaming 3

If I were to upgrade I would get the Asus Prime Z370A and the 8600k (Along with some new thermal paste)

In addition, Would the cooler master 212 be okay for some minor overclocking?

You can upgrade to i7 7700k as you don't need to upgrade the motherboard . It's still a best gaming cpu . Even if you upgrade to 1440 or 4k and pair it with a gtx 1080ti , it scales well

The i7 7700k is one of the best cpu for gaming right now you are definitely right as well as saving money as your not changing the motherboard, possibly could upgrade a different part of the computer with the money saved or whatever.

And certainly the 7700K will more than saturate a GTX1060...; so much so that even an 8700K would score quite similarly in average framerates even at 1080P....(as long as streaming is not an issue, anyway)
