Hello Tomshardware

I just got a good paycheck and i wanted to upgrade my girlfriend's PC. The problem though.. I don't have money for a "all out" upgrade on the pc, so im planning to do it over the next months to half year.

I have tried to do some research but im still not that great with computers and the impact of different components. So i hope you can help me out.

Current Parts in the rig:

CPU - i5-6500
Cooler - Cryorig H7
Mobo - Asus H110M-A/M.2
Ram - Corsair Vengeance LPX 8GB - 2133 mhz
HDD - WD10EZEX - WD 1 tb
GPU - Gigabyte GTX 1060 3GB Windforce OC
PSU - CX450M

So i have looked at the I7-7700k and the non K version. Since i don't want to overclock and since the mobo can't overclock i decided on the I7-7700

Then i looked at some Youtube videos and some compare I5-6500 vs I7-7700 and ofc it gains like 20 fps in some games, but then again when i see compare-videos for PUBG it doesn't gain that much. How could that be? could it be a GPU problem? Would it be better to upgrade to a GTX 1070 instead?

And no SSD and 8 GB's of ram is not that great so i have looked into that upgrade aswell and since Ram prices are insane i can only upgrade SSD and Ram together like a combo and no CPU or GPU then.

What would be the smarest move on Upgrade for a better performance right now.. an I7-7700 or GTX 1070 or SSD + RAM?

Her PC have been struggling in PUBG and sometimes in CSGO (Weird tho, sometimes dipping under 144 fps and on a 144 hz monitor that's bad). She wants to play those games so the upgrade should go the way of High FPS in PUBG and CSGO aswell.

Hope you can help me guys.

Their really just not much upgrades that make a big difference unless you can sell what she already has and...

Yeah i thought about that and that's why i wanted to upgrade to a ASUS GTX 1070 ROG Strix Gaming 8 gb (ROG STRIX-GTX1070-O8G-GAMING) and according to Pcpartpicker it should pull 310W in the entire system so that 450W should be enough right? But that GPU is very expensive in Denmark (700$) but im prepared to pay that if that's the problem in the build and the reason why her PC is struggling to play PUBG.

One more question... Upgrade from a GTX 1060 3 GB to a 6 GB would not be recommend right? I guess that is a way to small margin on FPS wise?

I see.. Looks like CPU upgrade don't do me alot of good looking at that chart? But when we then compare it to other games.. Like CSGO it would be better to upgrade the CPU right? Sorry im alittle confused to what i should upgrade first. The I5-6500 to I7-7700 or GTX 1060 3 gb to GTX 1070 8 gb.. Could you recommed what i should upgrade first?

It really is a tough call since all the parts you already have are pretty good.

The best all-around upgrade would be SSD and RAM but wouldn’t do much for framerate.

If I had to pick, given gpu prices right now, would start with the cpu (double check there is a bios version for that mobo that supports 7xxx processors).

Edit: you could still consider a 7700k even tho you’re not going to overclock since it has a faster base and boost clock even at stock.

Next step, SSD and RAM.

Finally, the gpu. That gives several months for new gpu’s to (hopefully) be announced and gpu prices to return to something reasonable.

Some games are just bad for hardware. I would also be looking at the net connection.

Thanks for that site. I just seems like the GPU would give way more FPS than if i upgraded the CPU. I think im gonna wait a bit and then buy the GPU then upgrade the rest, im still very confused though..

Thank you all for the answers, seems like this i a tough one to call.
