Upgrade Inspiron 570 to Phenom II X6?

There are a few limitations to upgrading the CPU in the Inspiron 570. Firstly, it only offers BIOS support for Phenom X4 processors. Secondly the stock cooler and motherboard only support CPUs with a TDP of 95w. Fortunately there are some X6's that have a 95w TDP. As far as the BIOS issue is concerned, per this thread:

an X6 will boot, but because there is no BIOS support, the cores will run at 800Mhz. However, the thread also implies that software can be used to boost the multiplier. I presume they're talking about AMD OverDrive. Does it seem plausible that one could drop in a Phenom X6 @ 800 Mhz, then boost the multiplier with AMD OverDrive to what it should be? Has anyone tried such a crazy experiment?

After some research, I found a full list of supported motherboards:

More than .01%, but you're right, I don't see any OEM boards at a quick glance.
No BIOS support means there is a 99.9% chance it won't boot at all. Almost all OEM computers have very limited upgrade paths because if you could upgrade it you wouldn't need to buy a new one. :)

You could always try it if it's just something to play with and not a system that's important.

I'd have to disagree with the 99.9% figure. How do you explain the Socket 771/775 mod? Here are several threads about popping a 771 Xeon into 775 motherboards. You can even find pre-made plastic shields on eBay to put on your Xeon and then slip it into a 775 socket.

The first article does note that your BIOS must support a *similar* Core 2 processor, but there does seem to be a wide variety of Xeons that work. That said, I agree, it's a toss of the dice whether a Phenom X6 would work. I was hoping someone with experience with AM3 CPUs could chime in on whether AMD overdrive would have any chance of upclocking an unrecognized processor.

Those posts are also about certain specific motherboards as well. Notice there is not a single OEM board there. Those 6 or 8 boards fall in the .01% 😉
