Hello. Recently I got a Sony Vaio VPCEH16EC which seems to be the Chinese model of the VPCEH16EA. I got it for free.

Anyways the computer has a 2310m in it and I wanted to see if it would be possible to upgrade to a 2720QM. I already see that this model is up-gradable, I just want to know if it will handle this specific upgrade.

I see the 2310m TDP is 35W and the 2720QM is 45W. Will this cause a problem?

Solution
I would worry about overheating and bios issues, but it's possible. Depending on how much you plan on spending on the 2720qm, I personally think getting a new laptop would be a better solution. If you're hellbent on doing this, this article and video may be of some assistance. From what I can see it doesn't look like the 2720QM is supported, the bottom link is supposedly the processors compatible with the chipset.

Thanks for your reply.

It actually does show the 2720QM as compatible and also shows up to the 2820QM.

I'm seeing the 2720QM on ebay for 60ish so it would really just be that the computer cost me $60. I don't have money to purchase a much better computer and I do video editing. Trying to do it on the go so I can work more.

NVM I'm blind, was thinking they were in some kind of order lmao.

Haha yea it took me a second to realize that the numbers weren't exactly in order and it seemed like it was in order of relative performance or something.

Thanks so much for the help you rock!

I'm thinking of doing this exact switch with my VPCEH1L8E so would like to know how this worked out. I understand this is an old thread so the likelihood of getting a response is low however a response would be incredibly useful.

I upgraded my VPCEH1L8E from the i3-2310m to the i7-2720QM. I did not have any problems with BIOS or with overheating. Of course it runs warmer than the i3 and the temperatures are a lot more volatile but that is expected as it is more powerful than the i3. Core temperatures at idle fluctuate between 30-50 degrees celsius. I would say the higher temps at idle have probably been when it has been performing windows update in the background. If you're in a very cold environment it might drop down to the twenties. On full load it can get up to 80+ degrees celsius in a warm environment which infringes on cooling like having it on your lap. I have yet to use it through the Summer so I couldn't comment on how toasty it gets then.

I imagine idle temperatures would ideally be more stable around 20-30 degrees celsius and they could be if you minimised the amount of background processes running. At this moment I have two tabs open on firefox, hw monitor and the mail app open using battery power and core temperatures are in the low to mid 30s.

If you're using this laptop on a hard surface and you don't live in an environment where it is over 30 degrees celsius for the majority of the year you will not experience heat related deficiencies. Even then you'd have to be overloading it regularly which would cause most other laptops to suffer.

Before installing the CPU I would thoroughly clean the panasonic cooling fan of any dust. I used Arctic MX-4 thermal paste when reinstalling the new CPU.

I also upgraded my VPCEH1L8E with 8GB Corsair DDR3L Ram and a WD BLUE SSD. Performance is great.

Yes, of course as long as you want to. It is possible and I believe it has future proofed my laptop for a good couple of years. I run AutoCAD and Revit 2017 along with Adobe CC programs and it runs on par with a current mid tier laptop like a Thinkpad. The only component that will let my or your laptop down in 2017 is the graphics. The Nvidia 410m graphics that your model appears to have is a lot rarer and performs better than the integrated graphics my model has but by today's standards they are way behind the times. Of course this does not really matter because if you were serious about gaming you would probably have a desktop with a powerful GPU.

To my knowledge the VPCEH series (the series both our models were part of) were shipped with either the Pentium B940, i3-2310m or the i5-2450m then for the GPU there was a choice of integrated graphics (Intel HD 3000) or dedicated graphics (Nvidia GeForce 410m). I am quite certain they all used the same motherboard just as they all had the same casing.

UserBenchmark for VPCEH1L8E showing performance difference between i3-2310m builds and i7-2720QM

If you sift through some of these you'll get an idea of what CPUs have been used in VPCEH series laptops which have been changed from the stock CPUs they are shipped with. There are a lot of models there because they were sold with different model numbers in different continents and I think there were numerous other options beyond CPU and GPU like RAM and HDD size that dictated other model number variants.

eBay is where I got mine for £64 ($90 USD) which isn't too bad compared to the cost of the SSD or RAM. I guess craigslist, gumtree or even amazon might be an option. Might be worth checking some second hand computer shops if you have any in your area but eBay will be your best bet.

There are all the possible CPUs for that chipset. I went for the i7 2720QM because it was the best performing with the highest chance of a successful upgrade.
