Hey everyone, I currently have a system that I built about 2 years ago, and it's still holding up nicely. My hard drives are becoming outdated and I'd like to upgrade the system to meet my current and future needs.
I haven't kept up to date with current hardware specs, but after reading some reviews I feel like I'm somewhat up to date. I used to game a lot, but lately I've been using my computer to rip blu ray movies, and encode them using handbrake. This means I will need plenty of storage space, with possibly a primary SSD to handle the ripping/OS/games (I primarily play modern warfare or other FPS games).
I'm going to be getting a boxee next week, so the computer will stream my movie collection to the TV in my room. Here is my current setup:
1 x COOLER MASTER RC-690-KKN1-GP Black SECC/ ABS ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
1 x EVGA E758-A1 3-Way SLI (x16/x16/x8) LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard
1 x EVGA 896-P3-1170-AR GeForce GTX 275 896MB 448-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card
1 x CORSAIR Enthusiast Series CMPSU-850TX 850W ATX12V v2.2 / EPS12V v2.91 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply
1 x Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor BX80601920
1 x G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9T-6GBNQ 1 x Western Digital Caviar
It's currently running on 2 SATA 500GB hard drives in RAID0, and I will need some sort of redundancy with my new configuration, most likely RAID5. I also have a 24" monitor so I'm good to go in that category.
My question is, what parts should I go about upgrading to make this the media workhorse that can store all of my files and also play games? It currently takes about an hour to rip a blu ray to my hdd, then about 4 hours to encode it.
