Question Upgrade motherboard to support overclocking for i5 9600k or should I get new motherboard and CPU?

Have had i5 9600k for 4-5 years now. Had occasional stuttering in my FPS games and finally made me want to overclock it recently.. until I learned H370m does not support overclocking. Is it worth finding a new LGA 1151 motherboard (that I hear isn't made anymore and prob pretty expensive) or just upgrade both? On somewhat of a budget but I don't mind splurging a little bit.

I have a 1660 ti GPU, G. Skill Ripjaws DDR4- 3200 RAM, EVGA 500 W pw supply, Deepcool AG400 CPU cooler

Hey there,

What exact budget do you have in mind, and how much wiggle room?

You could keep your GPU, the ram and cooler. The EVGA 500w is prob the B model, and isn't very good. You might have to factor that in too.

The GPU is prob the weak point there.

Something like this would be strong for 1080p:

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700X 3.4 GHz 8-Core Processor ($169.00 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: MSI MAG B550 TOMAHAWK MAX WIFI ATX AM4 Motherboard ($179.99 @ Best Buy)
Video Card: Palit Dual GeForce RTX 3060 12GB 12 GB Video Card ($353.46 @ MemoryC)
Power Supply: Corsair RM750e (2023) 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply ($99.99 @ Best Buy)
Total: $802.44
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

I've added in a GPU there. Along with the CPU would give you a solid boost. You could sell your current GPU for maybe $150.

The alternative would be Ryzen 7xxx/Intel 13th/14th Gen for a bit more money

Either approach has a HIGH probability of requiring a fresh OS install. If you haven't done one in years, you might get a performance boost just from a fresh OS install.

Thanks for the reply! Honestly my GPU temps and usage are quite low while achieving around 144 fps in games like Overwatch, CSGO, FIFA, etc. Granted that's usually on the lowest settings but I really do not mind, so I would prefer to not upgrade GPU if possible.

I would say my budget is around $400-500 preferably for a CPU and motherboard (Power supply too if you really think that should be upgraded). I'm more familiar with Intel CPUs and was looking at possibly the i5 12600k, not sure what you think about that or if there is possibly something better around that price. I don't necessarily mind switching to AMD though
