I have a sabertooth 990fx and I think I need to replace my CPU because it's overheating (long story, from another thread, it has to be the CPU)

Is the 8350 chip comparable to the latest intel? I could get a new motherboard that supports ddr4 too. I'm mostly doing visual studio and windows 10 features, basic windows 10 games like solitaire maybe, but not that much. Browsing websites and using webrtc a lot as well.

Main worry is my hard drive not being able to boot up on windows 10. will my hard drive boot up on windows 10 if I go from amd to intel?

Unless you have a 'retail' version of Windows, your current OS is 'keyed' to the 990FX motherboard. Otherwise, you cannot move the OS to a new rig.

Have you under-volted your current CPU?

There are 95w FX- CPUs available for your motherboard if you feel your -8150 is going bad ... and, the 125w FX-8350 is currently on sale at the Egg for $165.

It's a tad more efficient than the -8150 ... but nothing to do back-flips over.

I have yet to have an issue when simply calling MS saying I have changed motherboard (or other hardware) due to a failure, they have always re activated the licence.

To above, I know it's not a cooling issue.

I think because I'm not doing tons of gaming, it's probably not worth changing to intel.

Would a back up with windows 10 on amd, and then a restore to an intel system work though? I can put my backup on a storage system.

8350 is 166, but the new intel chip coming out is ony $235 Not that big of a difference and I can get DDR4.

I am currently undervolting my CPU and lowering the frequency of everything, that's how I'm able to type right now.

That is a violation of the OEM EULA, and is considered software pirating.

Encouraging this is also a violation of Tom's TOS.

Highly unlikely.

Why would MS allow it then?

I'm doing doing it this way, but it is valid. If you destroy your hard drive with a valid windows key, that windows license is no longer used, but you bought it.
This isn't an issue for me because have extra msdn licenses anyway.

Most of my stuff is in the cloud anyway, a brand new install isn't a big deal. It's really just a sql server express install and visual studio install that will take up time.

Tough call. Spend $200 on video card and CPU AMD and it will probably solve the problem. What if it doesn't, what if it's something to do with the memory or motherboard.

Probably better to spend $400 get a new Intel CPU plus motherboard, use ddr for and possibly M.2 drive later on
