Question Upgrade my PC

Hello everyone,

I'm new to building PC and as such this PC was a pre-built from 2012. It's been decent to me over time and the only real thing I've done to it is change the GPU. The current specs are as listed:

CPU: AMD FX(tm)-6300 Six-Core Processor 3.5 GHz
Motherboard: Asus M5A78L-M/USB3
Memory: Corsair Vengeance Blue 2X4GB DDR3 2133
Storage: WD Blue 1TB 7200RPM (2012) HHD
Storage: Adata Ultimate SU800 256GB SSD
Video Card: AMD RX 480 4GB
Case: Corsair Griphite Series 230T
Power Supply: Corsair CX Series CX500 500W

Now budget wise, I'm considering doing this piece by piece, so a mid ranged budget is fairly doable of say ~$1000-1200 over the next year.
I know the CPU is probably in dire need of being replaced but I'm unsure whether I'd need to get a new motherboard or not to do so. Any feedback would be highly appreciated. If there is any more information that I missed, please ask me and I'll provide it as soon as possible.

So piece by piece would be fine over the year although some recommendations will change as newer hardware comes out.

Get the Ryzen 7 with 8 cores, really good CPU at amazing price.
Also get a decent motherboard like the B450 Steel Legend to go with it to push some overclock on it, games will benifit from higher clocks.

I'd go...

CPU/MB/RAM first then PSU then GPU then Monitor. Your storage is fine and if desired maybe a new case?

I'm not sure when you intend on performing these upgrades, but AMD should be having new CPUs and graphics cards coming out sometime around summer. That could potentially change recommendations depending on when you decide to upgrade certain components. I would agree with the suggestion that it would probably be best to replace the CPU/motherboard/RAM first though, as the current processors offer significantly more per-core performance, whereas an RX 480 could still be considered mid-range for 1080p gaming.
