I have decided to stay with the AM4 platform for the next several years. I just upgraded my CPU to a Ryzen 7 5800 3D (from a Ryzen 5 3600). I am an occasional gamer and like to play 1st person shooters. The CPU upgrade has noticeably improved my gaming frame rates. My current GPU is an RX5700. I am now considering upgrading the GPU - looking to sort of max out on the AM4 platform.
Looking for some input from the gamers out there - I am willing to put maybe a max of $500 into a new GPU if my gains would be significant enough.

Here's my current rig:
CPU - AMD Ryzen 7 5800 3D
MOBO - MSI Tomahawk B450
GPU - RX 5700 8 GIG
RAM - 32 gig - 4X8 Ballistix 3200 DDR4
PSU - EVGA GQ 750
Monitors -
AOC CQ27G2 QHD curved VA (AMD Free Sync)
ACER G236HL

Sound - Realtek onboard
Speakers - Creative Inspire T3-100 2.1
Optical drives - 2
Mouse - Logitech G204
Keyboard - Logitech G213
Storage:
SSD PNY CS1111 240 GIG - Win 10 Home
HDD Seagate Firecuda 2TB
HDD Seagate Barracuda 1 TB
HDD Easystore 1TB (USB backup)

You should ONLY upgrade if you are currently unsatisfied with your current PC and it's performance. Or, the GPU is underperforming in games. On which screen resolution are you playing games?

1080p, 2K or 4K ? Because if you are on 1080p, upgrading the GPU won't give that much of a huge performance boost unlike 4K resolution. The lower the screen res, the more games are CPU-bound, but there is no hard and fast rule for this. Also depends on the game.

On AMD's side, you can either get the RX 7900XT, or the XTX model. The XTX has 24GB of VRAM, so it is a bit more future proof. Even Nvidia RTX 4070 Ti, 4080 are also good options.

Edit:

It seems that you are having two Monitors, one is Full HD and the other 2K. Which one do you use for gaming ?

Thanks for the reply.

I usually use 2K resolution for gaming. -

I use the AOC CQ27G2 QHD it runs at 144mhz with 2560X1440 resolution. It claims 1ms response time.

I am also thinking about games I may be playing over the next several years.

I also use the machine for music recording and editing and some simple video editing.

With the market being what it is right now I'm very much also in the camp of only upgrading if you need to. There's obviously no guarantee that future generations are going to be better priced, but I feel like it's the perfect time to play wait and see while Intel does whatever they're going to do. They're the most likely chance of prices getting back to rational levels in the next couple of years.
