Question Upgrade necessary? 2080 (Ti)? Or AMD? CPU sufficient?

Hi,

My current system is as following:
  • i7 6700k
  • Asrock z170 extreme4 board
  • MSI GTX 1070 Gaming 8G
  • 16GB DDR4
  • 660W PSU Seasonic
  • Monitor(s)/TV: 2560x1440p DELL 144Hz G-Sync, Standard 4K-TV and a not-for-gaming-used 27" 1080p Monitor

I have my system since mid 2016 and it was fine but i noticed some not so smooth gameplay/bit of stuttering in newer games recently so i messed around with some graphics setting and noticed i get SOO much smoother gameplay with low graphics settings so i checked my FPS at my normal settings: In F1 2018 for example i only get 40-45 FPS (4K TV), in BFV in 1440p i get basically the same. In BFV the CPU also seems on the limit (75%+ usage) on Multiplayer matches. Difficult to describe because 40-50 FPS does not look so bad but when it turn down the graphics settings and get like 90-120FPS it is just something completely different. More noticable in the racing games than in the Shooter i must admit.

I am playing several games, mostly older, but also newer games. The newer games become/became a problem recently, especially the ones on the 4K TV which are: F1 2018 (in June = F1 2019, which seems to be a bit more demanding) and several other racing games (Assetto Corsa, iRacing, etc. etc.)

On my 27" DELL i play all other games like BFV, BF4 and a ton of other games that are out right now.

So i am asking myself: Time to upgrade?
It would basically be a complete new system because of Intels strict policy regarding platform compatibility.

What would you suggest in terms of upgrading? Which parts? Upgrade or wait?

Well i replaced recently my 1070ti cause in bfv for example i had many drops like below 60-50 fps.I bought rtx 2080 and everything is smooth now. BFV i have 100+ fps always at all ultra 1440p with not the best cpu. For 1440p 144hz rtx 2080 wont disappoint you and will perform good in 4k too i dont think the price difference is worth for the ti if you main play at 1440p monitor and dont care to play in 4k with high graphic rather than ultra in some games. New gpu from amd are on the way too but no-one knows if the will be better and ryzen 3rd generation around july.

Thank you.
@ stefanos50: Thats exactly the kind of increase i am looking at in BFV. About 90-100FPS would be nice. The 2080 Ti also does not seem to hit the 144 FPS for my 144Hz Monitor. (i think) so id be better off with the 2080 i think?? What do you think?

@ jankerson: Do you think the GTX 2080 Ti could hit the 144FPS in my games in 1440p (BFV) and 2160p (F1 2018, Assetto Corsa, etc.)? I can not seem to find any valid benchmarks for the racing games. In BFV it does not seem like it could hit 144FPS https://www.hardocp.com/article/201..._nvidia_ray_tracing_rtx_2080_ti_performance/8

At 1440P, should be no problem with those games, BFV is pretty demanding so it will depend on the settings.

A lot of those racing games aren't all that demanding.

Well even 2080 ti wont hit more than 80 fps in ac odyssey for example 2k resolution or maybe shadow of tomb raider. But who cares to have 144hz at these games anyway. Rtx 2080 will hit 144hz most of the games especially the competitive ones. I have ryzen 5 1600 3.85ghz at the moment that dont have the best single core performance and still get 100+ fps. For 144hz you should have anyway a strong cpu to hit that 144fps because many games are cpu demanding. Your cpu isnt that bad either. I would just change the gpu to rtx 2080 and wait until new ryzen cpu.

That's pretty interesting.
Sorry to ask, but I'm in the same situation, I have GTX 1070, R5 1500X and 16GB 2333Mhz but I only play on a 1080p 170hz. Which should I upgrade? And to what should I upgrade?

Have you overclocked your 6700K?
If not, I would do that first, it is a free upgrade.

Since you do better with lowered settings, I think it indicates that you could do better with a more competent graphics card.
Make that something like a GTX1080ti/RTX2080 class card.

Well for 1080p for sure you need a strong cpu moreover ryzen needs fast ram to perform good i would suggest wait for new 7nm ryzen and a new 3200mhz+ kit. Then you should consider buying 2070 maybe.

Ok thanks for the answers. I will not upgrade the CPU just yet. I will go for the GPU and upgrade the CPU later (Ryzen maybe)

Which partner card/custom design of the RTX is preferable? (Power/Noise)?

Overclocking the CPU also seems a good idea.

Graphics card vendors bin their chips and use the better ones in factory overclocked versions
that they can sell for more. You may be able to OC more, but then again, perhaps not.
They try to differentiate by adding cosmetics and fancy coolers which also sell for more.
I do think you get fair value from a modest factory overclocked card.
If you need more performance, they buy a higher tier card in the first place.
I would not chase the very highest overclocked versions.

I happen to favor EVGA for their usa based support, warranty, and upgrade options.
