The parts I have now are

Processor: Intel i7 950

Motherboard: gigabyte x58a-ud3r

I only use my pc for gaming, no rendering, video editing, etc.
They've been good to me for 5 years now but I feel its time for an upgrade soon. Ideally I would like the next processor/motherboard that I buy to last just as long as these have lasted.

Budget-wise I feel like the smartest bet would be to buy an intel i5-4690k and a ASRock Z97 Extreme6 motherboard. Would this be a worthwhile upgrade for me? Would it be better to wait a little longer and maybe get another i7 once some prices drop or something goes on sale?

My primary goal here is longevity.

I'd wait till Skylake and socket 1151 if your computer isn't having any major issues that require an immediate replacement. For longevity reasons this will probably be the best by leaving you an upgrade path on a new socket and ddr4 memory capability.
