[SOLVED] Upgrade now or hold out longer???

To upgrade or not to upgrade.

Current setup:

I-5 6600k @4.5ghz
Asus maximus viii
Gskill ripjawz v 3000mhz 2x8gb
Asus strix gtx1070
Corsair hx750i
Dell 27" 1440p/155hz

I'm going to be picking up an rtx 2080 here very shortly and have been pondering a full system update as well.

The question remains as to if I should do it now or hold on to what I have and see what options the rest of the year bring. While pleased with the current setup, I'm willing to upgrade if the benefits are there. So far my only plans as of right now are the gpu and possibly a ram refresh, as well as updating my aging HDDs with one SSD.

My options: I-7 7700k. New these are still around the $350 mark and honestly I'm not sure if that price would be worth the performance gain. If I could find a good deal on a used on it make a price to performance a little better, but searching used sites, still looks to be $250+, unless I get lucky. But I could keep my current motherboard.

I-7 8700k or 9700k. Would require a new board, but I'd be willing to do so if the gains are that much better. If I were to go this route, which is the better choice? Price seems to be within $25-40, so I think the 9700k Would be better just because it's newer? Or is the 8700 a better option?

Switch to ryzen? I've always leaned toward Intel and haven't done an amd build for several years. I did have a phenom build and an fx4350 build though, so not against going back. Is ryzen a good option, keeping in mind that this is solely a gaming setup and would not be doing any streaming, editing, etc. If I did go this route 2600x vs 2700x?

Or should I just wait until next gen ryzen releases and see if it's as good as the leaks say? This is kind of what I've been leaning towards, but if Intel is still the way to go for gaming, I could start my upgrade much sooner.

Thoughts, opinions. Anything.

Solution
Upgrading your CPU will absolutely not be worth it for gaming; especially @1440p. I have i7 960/4770K/6700/6820HK/6850K/7800X and i5 6600K systems, you will see such a small performance difference you will kick yourself unless you have money to toss.
What performance increase you'd see with an i7-7700k would depend on the software, or games you're playing. If they're limited in number of core/thread usage and heavily dependent on IPC then you'd see a minor boost.

Moving beyond the current motherboard puts both Intel and AMD options against each other. Intel currently has the IPC advantage, and have added cores/threads to their CPUs to have parity with Ryzen's offerings. Though as I understand it the 9th gen Intels run a bit hot.

Seems to me, the main unknown is what your expectations of the upgrade are. With a 1440p monitor at 155Hz... For reference: https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Intel/Core_i9_9900K/14.html
This may help to provide some context. 'Better' really depends on what aspect is being looked at (and not something everyone agrees on).

Unless the system is currently struggling with what you want it to do, an upgrade could be difficult to justify given how much you'd have to spend.

I definitely don't have the money to just toss. But if an up grade wouldve greatly helped, I could budget it in. But it sounds like waiting and spending the money elsewhere is the better bet. I don't mind upgrading when needed but don't want to feel it was wasted money.

As far as what I'm trying to get out of the system, is just good solid frame rated and playable games. Definitely not trying to max out the monitor or I'd be saving for a 2080ti. I'd be happy with a solid 80+ in most games, as I'm currently getting around 60-70.
