Upgrade now or wait till dx10.

I have a AGP system running @ 3200+. Video card is a 6800ultra.

Should I upgrade everything now to the new AM2 requiring me to get a new video card now... or should I wait till the dx10 cards come out.

Unless you have the money to burn, I'd wait. I've got an AMD 2600+ 512MB RAM and just recently upgraded my GPU from a 9800pro to X800XL for $119, which is a considerable, but CHEAP upgrade.

I'm thinking about waiting for D10 as well. Thing is I need a new system now. What would be a good cheap solution to hold me over until D10 comes out at reasonable prices? Almost anything will be an improvment over what I have now.

AMD or Intel?

If you go AMD:

X2 3800- $169 (upgrade to 65nm AM2 CPU in December w/ your video card)
Asus M2N-E- $96
7600GT - $150
2GB DDR2-800 RAM CAS4- $250
250GB hard drive- $80 or so
DVD-burner- $40
Case/PSU- $150

If you go Core2-

CPU- $250
Motherboard- $150
rest the same, but of course it will perform faster.

Thanks for the fast reply. Pretty much what my system is going to be x2 3800 with the K8L upgrade idea. I ment graphic card wise. 7600GT sounds good and I've toyed with the idea. What about the GS or LE cards or Abit options?

yeah even when dx10 comes out there will <i think> only be
a handfull of dx10 games avialable. i personally am waiting for
fightsim x. it will still be compatible with dx9 though
as will most dx10 stuff.

i think dx10 and games will take awhile <say this time next year>
i am in the process of purchasing another 6800gt for sli in my rig.

so i say keep your current rig <unless you have the money>
because am2 and conroe today will probably be half price
or out of date  by springtime next year.

which is when?? vista and dx10 come out. maybe?

I have an older system with a Geforce 400mx PCI. Almost anyting is better. :p Finally upgrading with my 1st build. I was thinking of going with a low end card and upgrade later. Or should I just say screw it and go with a 7900GT and wait a generation or two for all the kinks to be worked out with D10.

Remember, each current generations' mid-end is roughly equal to the previous generation's high-end. Like, a 7600GT is almost the same as an X850XT in most benchmarks. You could always get an ASRock Dual-SataII motherboard. It supports both PCIe AND AGP, as well as Socket939 and AM2.

Go for the 7600GT. The GS model is cheaper but based on benchmarks it's also quite a bit slower. In fact the 7600GS is about the same speed as the 6800GT, or slower in some games.

LE = "Lite Edition" or "Loser Edition"

SE = "Special Edition" or "Slow Edition"

XT = High end performer if the card is an ATI Radeon.

XT = Slow, lowend performer if the card is nVidia GeForce (confusing huh?)

I would OC my video card, but the last time I overclocked anything was a 486 with the chip speed doubler. LOL.

Thanks for the help. I guess dx10 it is... I just will have to put oblivion back on my shelf unless anyone knows how to disable stupid shader 3 support so it runs beter.

Since you're doing your build now instead of waiting for DX10, and if you can afford it, I'd say just get the 7900gt. It'll hold you over longer.
