Upgrade on a budget

I am having trouble deciding whether to upgrade my graphics card or getting a solid state drive, and my budget is $100 for the upgrade.

My current system:
CPU: Intel Core - i5 2400 up to 3.3 GHz
GPU: Geforce GT 610 Zotac 2GB synergy edition
HDD: 1TB Western Digital Drive
Ram: 8x1GB HyperX Fury
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA P75-D3 V1.1
Fan: Intel stock CPU Fan

the computer which is used for school work, and wanted to create a better performing PC

For serious stuff like schoolwork, grab the SSD. If you game, then this RX-460 is probably the best you'll do for $100.

I'd go with a graphics card.

GPUs to consider for around $100:

~GTX 1050 Ti~ kind of out of your budget, but it's the best budget GPU.
1. GTX 1050
2. GTX 950
3. RX 560
4. RX 460
-----try to stay above this line-----
5. GTX 750 Ti
6. RX 550
7. GT 1030

As long as it isn't a cheapie, yes. Needs at least a 25amp +12V rail.

I currently have the gigabyte ge-c420a-c2 psu in my system, will it work?

Yes, that PSU will handle the RX-460 just fine. And the GTX 1050 Ti if you decide to spend a little bit more money.
