Good afternoon,

I am someone who gets ideas as quickly as they can forget about them so before I forget about this solution I wanted to write it here and get some feedback from you guys if possible as I have nobody I can speak to about this. I built a pretty good PC back in 2013 and honestly speaking, it was too powerful for my uses as I pretty much only ever use it to study as I have a dedicated HTPC used as a Plex server and gaming PC. It is only now starting to show its age. I have always wanted a NAS to increase the amount of local storage and I was thinking about maybe converting the 9 year old PC into a NAS, hopefully keeping as many of the original parts to save money.

I was considering upgrading it with a whole new motherboard, ram, CPU and liked the look of the Ryzen 5950x but of course, with a new build comes a lot of costs and I am not the most knowledgeable when it comes to figuring out why I should go for certain parts so last time I just bought the most expensive things I could afford. Now I am at university and I also have an iPad Pro and a Macbook Pro M1 13". Now I have used Windows all my life and it is taking me some time to get used with the Apple ecosystem but I reckon I will be okay using it as my main device, at least throughout the next 3-4 years at university - only concern atm is somehow getting the Macbook to work with both of my screens and managing all the USB connected devices I have. I understand there are certain docks I can buy that would allow me to connect the laptop to ethernet, two monitors and stuff - I guess I can connect the other USB devices straight into my monitor as that also has USB ports. I might even consider buying the next Mac Mini if the price is decent as that would still work out significantly cheaper than building a new PC or getting docks for the laptop.

Do you reckon I could just convert my PC into a NAS as my main uses for my PC is a Plex server, a bit of coding and in the future, a little bit of video editing. The lower the power consumption on the NAS, the better. Those are things I could easily do on the Mac and then I could turn the PC into a NAS that houses several HDDs. I still love Windows though and probably will go back to it once I can afford an amazing build.

Many thanks!

You could run EasyNAS on a core2duo easily. (min req as of April '21 is a Pentium III) Doesn't even require a monitor, unless you feel like it or for initial setup/diagnosis etc. NAS just needs something to direct the traffic, and storage space to handle the traffic.

3rd/4th gen, no worries. Even an FX will handle it. Recommended is 1Gb of ram per 1Tb of storage, also ECC ram is recommended, but not every pc will fit ECC or can afford it.

Some NAS may require higher minimums, but a quad core Intel and 4Gb of ram - 4Tb storage is enough for a start.
