I built a machine about 5 years ago based on the ASUS Sabertooth 990fx motherboard AMD 8350fx processor and 8 gb hddr3 memory and radon sapphire HD 5450 GPU. Looking to modernize on a relative budget without doing a new build, looking for advice on if upgrading ram or GPU compatible with this motherboard would be worth it as well as component advice if I were to upgrade. Looking to spend under $400 on any upgrade.

Solution
The fx chip is very dated and very slow. I wouldn't install anything past a gtx1650 in it, maybe a gtx 1650 Super. I would also suggest an rx570/580, but since they are power hungry cards, you would likely need a new psu. From there, save up some more and build a new rig.

A fair point haha. When I built it 5 years ago I had plans to potentially upgrade further, so I got a 1200w so power would never be an issue and then I never upgraded. It was my first and only build so far, so there are some lessons to be learned from some of those decisions when I start my next build.

You definitely need to be be thinking about upgrading motherboard, processor, ram and video card if you have a budget for it. (Times are tough for most everybody). Regardless of which processor you choose, you will be needing 16 GB of DDR4 ram, but don't buy ram until after you have determined which motherboard you will buy. Always base your ram purchase on the manufacturer's QVL (Qualified Vendor List) for your specific motherboard model. Intel I5 and I7 processors are better for gaming while AMD Ryzen processors are less expensive and give better bang for your buck. If you choose Intel get an I5 10600k at the least - it can be overclocked to 5.1 Ghz - and will shine in games. With Ryzens overclocking is more difficult - and will be the bottleneck in gaming and not the GPU.
