Upgrade or let temptation fade

Black Friday sale-time... I can pick up a sapphire rx580 nitro+ se for 180 GBP or a Vega 56 for 299 GBP.
Or I can just sit with my R9 290 til 2019 when proper new cards come out ?
1440 gaming is my max with current monitor, & unless 1070ti drops to similar prices am sticking with amd...

R9 290 to RX 580 isn't worth it, the Vega 56 could be worthwhile but honestly unless your struggling to play games on that 290 I'd hold off.

Not struggling, just the R9 is relatively old and power hungry (300w draw at full belt), would like a less stressed system (power envelope and heat/noise I'm thinking of) but only if worth it

Prices on the GTX1060 should be dropping quite a bit in the next few months. That card has similar performance, but uses a lot less power than the 290. The GTX1070 and GTX1080 may begin to drop some too, as nVidia starts selling more of the 2000-series.

I wouldn't wait, the r9 290 is too weak for 1440p.

I'd get a Vega 56. That card is pretty great for 1440p and it would be a good upgrade over the R9 290.
