Current system

SUpernova 750 p2 psu
gigabyte G1 sniper 1155 z77 mobo
i5 - 3570k
16gb team elite ram
Aorus 1080ti
ocz SSD

PC use =
Gaming at 3440x1440
Autocad work
General browsing and film watching

Over the weekend my Mobo decided to die on me and i am left with a decision.

1. Replace mobo is the cheapest option but may have to be a used card as not sure any are available any more.
2. Just go all out and get a i7-8700k and mobo and ram to match
3. look at amd....

My concerns with upgrading is at the res i play at i will not much if any difference for the big price i will have to pay out. which makes me think it would be worth trying to keep my current system alive for a few more years if i can.

Whats everyone's opinion. i dont have much knowledge but this is what i have assumed from reading what i can find on the internet .

thanks in advance

Ally

You write, you use the PC for work as well. Since your only upgrade possibility is a 3rd generation i7, the platform is ripe for a change. In case you want to hold on to your DDR3 ram you can shift to the 6th-7th generation intel processors. If you are looking for a future proof upgrade, get a DDR4 platform based on a Ryzen cpu!

Your system has some value left, and can be sold. In 2-3 years the price of the ddr3 ram and 3rd gen stuff you have will be far lower.

Welcome to the forums ally,

gaming at UWQGH is just premium and that asks a premium price tag.
So in that case, If you want more fps because you feel its stuttering , than yes its worth the upgrade.

Im at the same resolution at my work right now and I do autocad too (which i should be doing instead of helping you right now ..) However this is going smooth enough for my liking .

so yeah that leaves just gaming.
checkout benchmarks! http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/intel_core_i7_8700k_processor_review,19.html

honorable mention is the ryzen 2700x http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/amd_ryzen_7_2700x_review,23.html

This is biased but I would get the intel i7 8700k because 1) you can probably afford it and 2) no hassle , intel always worked solid for me .

Hello Ally.

Option 1) Mobo is perhaps the weakest element of the computer. Is you buy a overpriced second hand Z77 mobo, you have a CPU 3570K which was very good at the time but which is clearly insufficient to handle a GTX 1080ti and AUTOCAD. And a Mobo without warranty that can be broken at any time.
Current CPUs equivalent in power to a 3570K are I3-8100 (Intel) and Ryzen 5 1500x (AMD). It is not that I recommend you buy one of the two, it is simply to show you what you currently have.

2) Any Intel CPU equal to or greater than I5-8400 serves you. Is you like overclock buy a Z370 mobo (and a K chip), other buy a B360 one.

3) Any CPU equal to or greater than Rizen 5 1600x serves you. Buy a B350 mobo.

2) and 3) You need 2x8 GB DDR4 RAM. If Intel a 2666 is enough. If Ryzen you need a 3200, especial for ryzen like Flarex.

Personally I prefer Intel if only because the pins are on the socket instead of the CPU (I admit it's silly ...).

Good luck!

thanks for all the reply's

I think i have decided against replacing the mobo, not keen on buying a second hand board at the prices i have found.
Think i will just spend that extra money now and hopefully have another setup that will last me 5 or more years.
Will get a I7-8700k, 16gb ram and an appropriate mobo.

was very tempted to look at amd but always had Intel and think i want to stay with them just because.

thanks again

Most, but not all. There are B150 and H170 boards with regular DDR3 support. Here is a budget alternative:

and a H170 ATX board
