I have the option to either upgrade my fx-6300 to an r5 1600 OR I can buy a load of games. I am having trouble deciding, which would be the better option?

Solution
Do you have enough games now to keep you busy? If yes, I'd upgrade, since a long backlog of games you aren't playing doesn't do much for you. Upgrading to a 1600, even with that 960, will transform the experience you get in everything, including the demanding games you already have.

If your game library is small, or maybe you've burned out on the games you have, then I'd spend money on the sales.
How does your FX6300 work for you in-game just now? What GPU is it paired with?
If it's still doing what you want fairly well, then I'd just pick up some games.
While an R5 1600 would be a sizeable performance boost, the FX6300 should still be fairly viable - provided you're pairing it with a GPU of similar performance and not expecting the world.

If it's struggling currently, then buying a bunch of new titles would likely be quite the waste if they won't run well.
