Upgrade or wait

Hey,
I have a GTS 250 1GB 256-bit GPU with a Intel E6850 and I'm thinking about getting a new build.
What do you say, should I struggle a bit more with this, almost 6 years old, rig and wait for GTX 800 series, or go for it and get a GTX 780 for Christmas?
I can still play Assassin's Creed IV with this current PC, although it's choppy with some FPS spikes, it's still playable at 25 FPS average on 720p.
I believe I can assume that a 780 will be able to max out most games for at least 3 years, till I leave for college.

Now buying a GTX780 on your CPU is a bad idea. It would be a considerable bottleneck.
