Upgrade Path from X79

Hi guys, I'm currently running on an x79 platform with an i7 3820 and an r9 290

I'm wondering what would be the best upgrade path for me? I'm looking to install the new r9 390 whenever it decides to show its face but I'm concerned about the longevity of x79 and my processor specifically?

Long story short, what would be the best upgrade path (if I even need to upgrade?) in relation to running games with all the attendant eye candy, possibly in 1440p?

P.S. - Crossfiring the r9 290 isn't really an option considering the heat!

Your current i7-3820 has plenty of power. No need to upgrade! Your current setup should have ZERO issues gaming at 2560x1440.

As you are running a single GPU, your X79 platform really doesn't get to stretch its legs with its additional PCI lanes. If you never plan to run CF / SLI, then your upgrade path is going with the typical LGA1150 socket (Z97).

Thanks for your opinions guys!

Hmm, I was thinking more along the lines of the next Witcher game if you guys know of it? Not sure if my i7 3820 is going to cut it for long, but I don't really feel like changing motherboard to an LGA1150 since the new LGA2011-v3 or whatever is out and I imagine the 1150 is on its last legs too!

I was thinking of going CF when the 390 comes out, but currently the r9 290 is way, way too hot for that!
