upgrade Pentium 4 2.4ghz to pentium 4 3.2 ghz problem

I have 12 old IBM netvista 8305 machines in a school lab.
The machines have 2.4 pentium 4 CPU, socket 478.
I want to upgrate the machines with pentium 4 3.0 ghz or 3.2ghz
When i install the 3.2 processor the machine doesnt start. The 3.2 processor is ok as it run on another machine.
What do you think is going on?

It could be that the BIOS needs to be upgraded.

Thanks for your answer. To be honest i have never update the bios. I will check it.
Any other idea?

I'd go and look up the info for that machine....including what CPUs it supports and which BIOS versions go with which CPUs.

Then I would check what BIOS you were running.

The only information i can find is a machine manual, not a motherboard manual.

That's the problem with "prefab" machines like Dell and Lenovo etc.

Although without the MB manual...you don't know which CPUs it will support and which BIOS goes with which CPU.

I see info saying that computer uses the 845g chipset. So I think it's possible the 3ghz CPU is the fastest that works with that chipset and the 3.2ghz CPU requires a more robust chipset. Not all Pentium 4 CPUs are the same.

There were different bus speeds standards of 400/533 and then 800 MHz as assorted later models were released; certainly, older motherboards might not have supported later 800 MHz bus speed variants...

Guys thankyou all but nonthing seems to solve the problem.
I update BIOS with the latest IBM version for this machine.
I also use a 3 ghz CPU (firstly i use a 3.2ghz) . Black screen is the answer from the machine.
The machine still working with the 2.4ghz CPU.
The 3.2ghz and the 3.0ghz Pentium4 cpu still working on other motherboards.
I think there is nothing else i can do. Any idea?
